Hints from Heloise: Education starts at home, too

DEAR HELOISE: Education begins at home! I recently encouraged all the parents of teenagers in our rural community to teach the kids three basic hand signals when they’re riding their ATVs or bikes on/near the roadway. Lots of kids ride them in the rural country areas and on the back roads. The feedback from parents was astounding in the fact that the general response was: “They don’t teach this in driver’s education.” Ugh! Children and teenagers do not need to learn everything from teachers. Parents should look it up and teach them the three basic hand signals at home! It’s ...

A last-minute birthday celebration and a busy week of canning

August brings us more birthdays in the family. A happy 67th birthday to my oldest sibling Leah on Aug. 15. Aug. 16 granddaughter Brooklyn had her first birthday. We gave her a balancer bike. She loves it but still needs to get the hang of staying on. She will manage it soon, I'm sure. She has warmed up to her little 3-week-old brother Jayden, who should just actually be making his appearance a few days ago. He is doing well and seems really contented. On Aug. 18, granddaughter Kaitlyn turned 10 years old. We gave her a music box chest. She was so happy for it and thanked me more than ...

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH: Treating rare type of cancer in finger

DEAR DR. ROACH: Do you know anything about aggressive digital papillary adenocarcinoma? My 39-year-old nephew was just diagnosed, and his parents are searching for answers. He’s getting scans to determine whether they should amputate his finger. As far as we know, it hasn’t metastasized. — A.M. ANSWER: No, I’d never heard of this condition. It’s extremely rare (1 in 10 million people). “Adenocarcinoma,” by definition, is cancer of the glandular tissue, and there isn’t really much glandular tissue in a finger. CANCER of any extremity is almost always of connective ...

HINTS FROM HELOISE: Hairspray gets rid of all stains

DEAR HELOISE: The first thing I read daily in the Kenosha News is “Hints From Heloise.” My go-to solution for ink stains is hairspray. Simply spray the ink spot, let it soak for a few minutes, then wash the item as usual. When treating a stain for the first time, I never put the item in the dryer, as heat will set the stain. Instead, I air-dry the item and repeat the process if necessary. — Hede H., in Kenosha, Wisconsin DEAR HELOISE: We hung our somewhat-wet bathing suits on the shower bar above our fiberglass tub/surround, and they dripped, causing a light blue and ...
