Hopewell presents a ‘Witch’ both old and new

An old play gets a contemporary twist with Hopewell Theatre's production of "Witch."
Jen Silverman's script is a modern-day take on the 1621 mortality play "The Witch of Edmonton." A charming devil arrives in the quiet village of Edmonton to purchase souls in exchange for their darkest wishes. Elizabeth should be his easiest target, having been labeled a "witch" and cast out by the town, but her soul is not so easily bought. As the devil returns time and again to convince her unexpected passions flare, alliances are formed, and the village is forever changed.
Shawn Lockaton directs the production, and the cast features Jaclyn-Sarah Senich, Brendan Boyle, Pete Sherman, Chuck Wilcox, Emily Royer and Dominick Spisak.
According to Lockaton, "One of my favorite things about the script is the language itself. The language directly connects the past to the present. The language is really clever in that it is set in modern times; they are using modern slang, some of the terms they even use come straight from our text messaging. However, when you come and watch the play, it will be taking place in the 1600s. So, you are watching these characters in full costume and a full set which takes place over two locations - cottage and castle. They are going to be people you recognize in our modern society, and people you would recognize in that society."
Show times are 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday through Oct. 24 and 2 p.m. Oct. 25 at Hopewell, 702 Mahoning Ave., Youngstown. Tickets are $25.10 for adults and $23.02 for students and senior citizens and are available online at hopwelltheatre.org and by calling 330-746-5455.
