Many adults are overdue for three screenings

YOUNGSTOWN — Mercy Health primary care physicians are reminding patients to prioritize preventive care this year and schedule their annual wellness exams.

Missing important routine screenings can lead to delayed diagnoses of conditions that are most treatable when caught early, putting patients at greater risk of complications.

“Preventive care plays a crucial role in helping patients maintain long‑term health,” said Dr. Jill Haltigan, Mercy Health family medicine physician. “A yearly visit gives your provider the chance to evaluate your overall wellness and spot early signs of health concerns before they develop into something more serious.”

These are the three screenings many adults are overdue for and why now is the perfect time to schedule them.

CANCER SCREENINGS

(BREAST, CERVICAL AND COLORECTAL)

The United States Preventative Services Taskforce recommends the following:

• Women should get yearly mammograms starting at age 40 and should get screened every two years.

• Women at average risk for cervical cancer should start screening at age 21 and should get screened every three years.

• Adults at average risk should begin colorectal cancer screenings at age 45.

BLOOD PRESSURE AND CHOLESTEROL CHECKS

Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the U.S. Providers recommend regular monitoring as part of an annual physical, especially for those with a family history of heart disease, diabetes or other risk factors.

DIABETES SCREENING

The American Diabetes Association recommends starting screening at 35 and repeat testing at least every three years.

“Annual exams are a simple, proactive step patients can take to stay on top of their health,” Haltigan added. “This time of year is ideal to get appointments scheduled, before calendars fill up with spring and summer commitments. And if patients aren’t sure which screenings they need, their primary care provider can guide them based on their age, history and risk factors.”

Mercy Health encourages Mahoning Valley community members to contact their primary care office or visit mercy.com to find a provider near them to schedule an annual wellness exam in 2026.

Starting at $3.23/week.
