Time for class: Driving 101

DEAR EDITOR: Summertime, more of sharing the roadways, time for a “Driving 101 Refresher.” Let’s begin with the roadway itself, its design, and more importantly, its markings. • Pavement Markings: Lines, arrows, symbols guide the drivers on lane usage, where to turn, go straight, or stop. Most ignored marking is the solid, thick strip informing drivers where to stop at an intersection. Turning lane stopping distance from the intersection is a little further back than the straight lane. The reason. Providing enough room for the driver turning into your roadway. We’ve all ...

Envisioning a healthier Youngstown

DEAR EDITOR: Youngstown faces a critical challenge to its future: limited longevity due to widespread chronic diseases. In Mahoning County, high rates of diabetes, heart disease and obesity shorten lives and strain families, healthcare systems, and our local economy. Many residents lack access to affordable health resources, such as preventive screenings or nutritious food, which are essential for healthy aging. These barriers diminish quality of life and hinder Youngstown’s potential as a vibrant, thriving community. Without action, we risk leaving future generations with the same ...

Those in long-term care need support

DEAR EDITOR: May was Older Americans Month, a time to recognize and honor the contributions of our older citizens. This is also a time to reflect on how we can better support and protect them — especially the most vulnerable among us who live in long-term care facilities. One invaluable resource many Ohioans may not be familiar with is the Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program at Direction Home of Eastern Ohio. Boardman concert was a great show

DEAR EDITOR: On Wednesday, I attended the Boardman Schools’ spring choir concert. It was outstanding. They presented the program in true Broadway fashion. For the finale, they did “The Battle Hymn of the Republic,” accompanied by the Boardman High School high Band. It was AWESOME! It brought the audience to their feet. Well done, Boardman! Let’s discuss Trump’s shortcomings

DEAR EDITOR: I admit that while his whispering of “well, guess what” during several speeches creeped me out, I never believed Joe Biden was too old for the job until I read Bob Woodwards’ account, in his book “WAR,” of the President’s failing mental acuity. The cover-up, in my opinion, was by his campaign staff. Mistake made, lesson learned. MAGAites, however, won’t ever admit Trump has any shortcomings. They prefer “doubling down” to “measuring twice and cutting once” thus explaining how corrupt 45 gave way to blatantly corrupt 47. Yet he commands blind loyalty ...

Don’t just criticize, solve a problem

DEAR EDITOR: This is for the person responsible for criticizing the Democrats in a recent Sound Off item. If you’re so intelligent and all-knowing, why not sign your name and let all the rest of us know what you propose to do to replace something that is working? What? DONNA NASSER Sharon, Pa.
