Sound off!

Last weekend I attended my 4-year-old granddaughter’s dance recital. At intermission, I went to the lobby and there was a group of people who smelled so bad of marijuana that the whole lobby stunk. I guess these people must have smoked during intermission. Smoking in public is illegal and driving after smoking is the same as drinking and driving. I can’t believe that people can be so inconsiderate to expose children to their bad habits. If you want to smoke dope, do it at home. — Hubbard A Hubbard writer wondered why some Sound Off writers, “apparently Democrats,” have to ...

Why are we importing white South Africans?

DEAR EDITOR: How about a follow-up on the 49 white South Africans brought to the U.S. by a private charter plane? Who is paying? What will their status be? Where are they located? What benefits are they entitled to? What relations are they to Elon Musk, or are they just another distraction by Trump and Musk so they can continue destroying America while they continue to make private profits for themselves all over the world? Make what is going on front-page news instead of burying it where most people don’t ever read it. Start doing your job to protect us by providing the facts ...

Fight against park tyranny isn’t over

DEAR EDITOR: I think it is clear that Aaron Young is trying to deflect growing efforts to reform how Mill Creek Park board members are selected. They realize there is a movement for changing the selection of “them” by a given vote of Judge Rusu and will continue if not stopped. Under Mr. Young’s leadership, Mill Creek Park has become a place where politics and secrecy thrive. They do not allow anyone to ask questions at meetings. When questions were allowed, people were never answered. Transparency is nonexistent. There used to be a citizens committee, but Mr. Young likes ...

Safe sleep for infants is critical

DEAR EDITOR: I am a senior nursing student at Youngstown State University. Recently, I completed my rotation on the maternity ward, witnessing births and helping new moms with newborn care. Working with these new moms, I learned that not all women are fully aware of the safest practices. Therefore, I wanted to bring awareness to the newborn parents about safe sleep practices for their infants. These practices may have been slightly different than what was in place for their other children or even what their mother showed them from when they were babies. Many parents are unaware ...

What’s extreme is our property tax burden

DEAR EDITOR: Last weekend The Vindicator described the petition to be circulated by the Citizens for Property Tax Reform as “extremist.” Other matters that I would consider extremist is when, in 2024, Mahoning County’s total property value went from $5.36 billion in 2020 to $7.22 billion and being told ad nauseam that even if your property assessment does increase, it doesn’t mean your taxes will rise; or being told there will be no additional tax if you vote for the passage of a peculiar levy and a year later you get billed for more money due to its passage. Extremism is ...

Officials dropped the ball on Memorial Day

DEAR EDITOR: Hundreds of Veterans and their families gathered all over the county to remember the men and women of our armed forces who gave the ultimate sacrifice. All Veterans gave some but some gave all. Memorial Day is a celebration to remind us that we must never forget the high cost that was paid in order to establish and maintain our freedom and the liberties we all enjoy. The Governor of the State of Ohio issued a directive that all flags be displayed at half mast until noon on Memorial Day. This is an honor that is granted limitedly because of the great significance that it ...
