Easy Street and YSO will present ‘South Pacific’

Auditions are scheduled this weekend for “South Pacific in Concert,” the second collaboration between Easy Street Productions and the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra.

The two arts organizations teamed earlier this year for a concert production of “Guys and Dolls,” which drew a near-capacity crowd at Powers Auditorium in February.

Easy Street co-founder Todd Hancock said he has been trying to get the rights to “South Pacific” for awhile, but he finally got approval over the weekend, and they decided to do it on an accelerated schedule with plans to do two shows at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 2 and 2:30 p. m. Nov. 3 at Powers.

The musical, focusing on a group of sailors and nurses stationed in the South Pacific during World War II, is celebrating its 70th anniversary. As a romantic musical that also addressed issues of racism and prejudice, “South Pacific” won 10 Tony Awards, including best musical, and it was the second musical ever to win the Pulitzer Prize.

“With some of the things that are going on now, I think it’s as timely as ever,” Hancock said.

Hancock will direct; Randall Craig Fleischer will conduct the orchestra members; Don Yallech will be music director; and Megan Cleland will choreograph the production.

Some of the performers from “Guys and Dolls” will return for “South Pacific.” Canfield native Elysia Jordan, who appeared the first national tour for the musical “School of Rock” and played Sarah Brown in “Guys,” will play Nellie Forbush. Allan Snyder (Sky Masterson in “Guys”) will play plantation owner Emile de Becque, and Canfield pediatrician John Cox ( Nathan Detroit in “Guys”) will play seaman Luther Billis.

David Toole is cast as Lt. Joseph Cable, but all other roles are open and a large chorus of sailors and nurses is needed. Cast requirements are males and females ages 16 and older as well as one boy and one girl between the ages of 10 and 13.

Auditions are scheduled from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Ford Family Recital Hall, DeYor Performing Arts Center, 260 W. Federal St., Youngstown. Those auditioning should prepare a one-minute song and bring sheet music for the accompanist. They also should be prepared to read from the script. Rehearsals will start Sept. 28.

Those who can’t attend can do a video audition which can be submitted (along with name, age, acting resume, headshot and contact information to easystreet shows@aol.com.
