BOARDMAN — The Curbstone Coaches added 12 new inductees to their Hall of Fame Sunday evening during the 53rd Annual Hall of Fame Recognition Banquet at Mr. Anthony’s in Boardman.
Former Ohio State and NFL quarterback Mike Tomczak was the guest speaker and Youngstown mayor Jameel Tito Brown presented both him and his former coach at Rayen high school, John Turco, who was inducted into the hall of fame Sunday, a key to the city.
The former Valley coach, who was known for leading several sports teams around the Valley, including a historic run with the Rayen Tigers, was joined by several other inductees after a two-year wait due to the COVID-19 pandemic canceling the induction ceremony the past two years.
The class was highlighted by the induction of a Valley great, coach Phil Annarella, who passed away unexpectedly on June 4, 2019. Annarella’s daughter, Melissa Faluhelyl accepted the award on her father’s behalf.
The Curbstone Coaches also inducted a pair of former Ursuline greats in Mike Banks and Tim Joyce, who were both honored for their efforts on the hardwood. Former Brookfield girls basketball coach Timothy Filipovich was also inducted after his historic coaching career with the Warriors.
Another Brookfield standout, John Zebroski was inducted for his efforts on the golf course.
