Penguins reach bowling Final 4

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Youngstown State bowling earned a come-from-behind win over Sam Houston State in the Region 4 title game to advance to the final four of the National Collegiate Women’s Bowling Championship.

The Penguins, who are in their first national tournament as a program, went 3-0 in the region and are now in the championship bracket along with no. 1 overall seed McKendree, Arkansas State and Nebraska, who have five national titles, the most in the NCAA.

“What a resilient group. I’m so proud of the effort and how we are sticking together through the ups and downs,” coach Doug Kuberski said. “The ladies’ energy is so powerful and so positive, and it’s a lot of fun to be a part of. We are going to enjoy the evening, rest up, and be ready to bring our A-game tomorrow.”

Sam Houston won the first match 1,046-870, but the Penguins rallied back and took the Baker point, setting up a best-of-seven series in Baker games, which YSU won 4-2.

It came down to one pin, as YSU anchor Emma Wrenn doubled in the 10th frame of game five which went on to make the difference.

The Bearkats didn’t make it easy however, as in game six they had mutliple chances late in the game to send it to a decisive game seven. Sam Houston State strung four strikes together to bring it within eight pins, but only hit seven on the final ball.

YSU, the No. 13 overall seed, hits the lanes today at 10 a.m. for the first match of the championship round against McKendree. Live video is available on NCAA.com.
