Saturday highlights

BASEBALL

Salem capped off its regular season Saturday with a 6-4 win to complete a perfect season in Eastern Buckeye Conference play. Freshman Carson Rhodes picked up the win, striking out five. The win marks Salem’s first league crown in three decades.

SOFTBALL

Five players for Canfield recorded multiple hits in a win over Green. Madison Angelo and Lauren Fitzgerald both recorded three hits and Sarah Ferraro, Liz Ferraro and Malena Toth each recorded two hits. The Cardinals moved to 16-6 on the year.

TRACK & FIELD

CORTLAND — The Kennedy duo of Jesse Likens and Chloe Coates each earned a meet MVP award at the Lakeview Invitational. Coates scored all 26 points for the Eagles on the girls’ end and Likens scored 26.5 of Kennedy’s 38 for the boys.

Sieasisa Triplett was the MVP of the girls running events, tallying 22.5 points of the team’s 101 points. Girard’s Mia Malito was the field event MVP, bringing 20 additional points to the team. The Girard girls were tied for second overall, scoring 101 points along with Geneva.

Lakeview’s girls won the meet with 124 points.

Geneva’s boys won both event MVPs and the meet with 121 points.

McDonald finished in second with 93 points and Girard finished third with 82.

BASEBALL

Liberty’s Dwight Parker and Western Reserve’s Nick Niemi supplied a pitching duel Saturday in Berlin Center. Each pitcher struck out 12 batters.

Liberty won 1-0 when Anthony Patrone poked an RBI single to right field in the top of the seventh inning after an error and wild pitch set the Leopards (7-11) up. It was the only hit Niemi surrendered.

Parker limited the Blue Devils (10-6) to three hits, including a double from Jake Pappagallo.

SOFTBALL

Alaina Francis and Alaina Scavina combied to strike out 18 batters in a doubleheader Saturday for Cardinal Mooney, which took down Ashtabula Edgewood 8-5, and Jefferson 11-3.

Scavina had four hits, two of which were home runs. Francis had five hits and freshman Parker Sheehan had six. Sophomore Marissa Bowman added four hits.
