Boardman girls fifth

COLUMBUS — After placing second in the qualifying round, the Boardman girls’ bowling team was eliminated in four games in the first match of the championship round to finish fifth overall on Friday at the Division I state bowling tournament.

The Spartans finished the qualifying round with a 3,261, just two pins behind the top team, Gahanna Lincoln, which went on to win the title over Beavercreek in four games.

Boardman fell in four games to Ashland. Boardman took the second game 154-135, and dropped the other three 191-184, 149-116 and 200-167.

Senior Josalyn Hibbard was the top placing Spartan, rolling a 589 series and finishing in sixth place in the qualifying round.

In her third game, Hibbard rolled a 240, which was the second best game of the afternoon behind Jenna Stretch of Kenston, who was the top individual.

Four of Boardman’s bowlers finished in the top 35. Lexus Petrich finished 19th with a 550, Fatima Rehman placed 23rd, rolling a 541, and Sam Hoffman placed 33rd, rolling a 523.

The Spartans return juniors Hoffman, Grace Oklota and Alayna Turillo next season.
