Boardman’s boys and girls bowling teams both qualified for the Division I state tournament and finished as district runner-up during action this week. Ironically, both Spartan squads finished second to Mentor in their respective district meets.

The Boardman boys rolled on Sunday at Stonehedge Lanes in Akron and finished 263 pins behind Mentor. Joe Taraszewski had the fourth-best qualifying series, a 695. His support came from a tight pack of fellow Spartans — Rees Beckman at 578, Daniel Enright with a 576 and Jacob Burkey at 575. Spencer Fernholz contributed a 515.

The state meet is scheduled March 5 (girls) and March 6 (boys) at Wayne Webb’s Columbus Bowl in Columbus.

In the girls’ district meet on Monday at Freeway Lanes in Warren, Boardman was second to Mentor by 168 pins. Josalyn Hibbard led the way for the Spartans with a 584, 13th overall among individuals. She was backed by Grace Oklota with a 570, Fatima Rehman at 533, Lexus Petrich with a 518 and Sam Hoffman at 481.

Harding placed eighth — the top five teams advanced to state — behind Marissa Stear at 550, Abbey Frazzini at 537 and Hailee Misel with a 518.

The Division II state competition is this week on Friday (girls) and Saturday (boys), also in Columbus.
