Fitch, Mooney, Poland boys roll to victories

BOYS BASKETBALL

¯ FITCH 66, SHARPSVILLE 49: SHARPSVILLE, Pa. — Todd Simons scored 21 points and Allen Underwood tallied 20 to lead the Falcons to a non-conference road victory. Jae Collins added nine points for Fitch.

The Falcons led 12-10 after one quarter, then stretched the lead to 27-21 at halftime and 40-29 after three quarters. Underwood scored 14 of his points in the final quarter as Fitch held off the hosts.

¯ CARDINAL MOONEY 50, HOWLAND 40: HOWLAND — Thomas Fire scored 20 points and Mick Hergenrother added 17 as the Cardinals held off the Tigers for a road victory. Mooney (9-3) led 15-11 after one quarter, 26-22 at halftime and 39-33 after three quarters.

Howland (4-8) was led by Jordan Sperling with 18 points.

¯ POLAND 59, LIBERTY 44: POLAND — The Bulldogs put together a 22-10 second quarter to overcome a 15-10 deficit and take a 32-25 halftime lead. Poland then extended the lead in the third quarter to 47-33.

The winners were led by Andrew Centofanti and rody Todd with 12 points each, and Ross Dedo with nine. Todd also had eight rebounds and four steals.

Liberty jumped to the early lead as James Davis scored eight of his 14 points in the first stanza. Jameer Weaver added nine points for the game and D’Andre Venters and Kalan Turner added eight apiece.

¯ WEST BRANCH 60, KENNEDY 37: BELOIT — The Warriors shut down Kennedy in the middle two quarters and got good balanced scoring to improve to 12-4. West Branch led 18-12 after one quarter, then increased that lead to 30-18 at halftime and 46-22 after three quarters.

Jaxon Hendershott led the Warriors with 15 points, Jed Smith had 12, Dru DeShields added 11 and Andrew Coffee and Josh Gregory contributed eight apiece.

JFK was led by Cam Hollobaugh with 16 points.

¯ HUBBARD 63, MATHEWS 55: HUBBARD — Riley Heckert poured in 24 points on the strength of six 3-pointers and the host Eagles built a 49-34 lead entering the fourth quarter to hold off the Mustangs in a non-league tilt.

Andrew Frank added 10 points to the Hubbard cause.

Kyle Powell led Mathews with 17 points. Dominic Greenwood scored 14 and Vincent Greenwood added 12.

¯ GIRARD 57, LABRAE 39: GIRARD — Thomas Cardiero scored 25 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Indians. He scored all 12 of Girard’s points in the first quarter, then added seven of his points in the third quarter when the Indians put together a 21-10 quarter to increase a 24-21 halftime lead to 45-31.

Gus Johnson added 10 points for the Indians and Ashton Pozega grabbed 12 rebounds.

LaBrae was led by Landen Kiser with 13 points and Leon Miranda with 10.

¯ CHAMPION 63, JACKSON-MILTON 53 (OT): NORTH JACKSON — Austin Willforth was 5-for-6 from the free-throw line in overtime and Keegan McDermott and Chase Lindsay both made 3-pointers as the visiting Golden Flashes outscored the Blue Jays 15-5 in the extra period after the hosts rallied to force overtime at 48-all.

Willforth, who was just 4-for-10 from the stripe in regulation, finished with 15 points and Lindsay led Champion (6-5) with 16 points and four 3-pointers. Mason McKinney and Keegan McDermott added nine points apiece

Jackson-Milton trailed 38-30 entering the fourth quarter. The Blue Jays got a game-high 19 points from Cole Grope, includ five 3-pointers. Nick McGinnis addded nine points.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

¯ WEST BRANCH 35, CANTON SOUTH 25: CANTON — The Warriors bolted to a 15-2 first-quarter lead and maintained the cushion throughout to beat the host Wildcats in an Eastern Buckeye Conference encounter.

Emma Egli scored 14 points and Sydney Mercer supplied eight for West Branch (15-4, 7-3 EBC).

Canton South fell to 12-7 and 5-6.

¯ COLUMBIANA 43, VALLEY CHRISTIAN 42: COLUMBIANA — The Clippers fell behind 14-3 after the first quarter, but rallied back in the Eastern Ohio Conference contest to beat the visiting Eagles.

Tori Long tallied 18 points and five Steals and Grace Whitmer produced 17, eight rebounds and six assists for Columbiana (8-5 overall, 6-2 EOC).

Kristen Gill poured in 27 points for Valley Christian.

¯ LEETONIA 41, MATHEWS 38 (OT): LEETONIA — The Bears used a 13-5 fourth-quarter scoring advantage to force overtime at 36-all and Ella Gregorino scored all her her team’s points in overtime to beat the Mustangs in a non-league encounter.

The hosts trailed 33-23, but Taran Ferry scored 10 of her game-high 16 points in the remainder of regulation, including a pair of free throws with 20 seconds left that gave the Bears a 36-34 lead. Mathews tied it on a basket from Mya MaGregor with 8 seconds left.

Gregorino scored first in overtime with a bucket, then made the game’s lne 3-pointer for a 41-36 lead. Mathews scored last on a hoop from Brooke Bauer.

Allison Francosky added 10 points for Leetonia (10-5). For the Mustangs (5-7), Bella Greenwood scored 11, with Bauer and Ashley Deans both scoring 10.

¯ MAPLEWOOD 53, GIRARD 28: GIRARD — Maplewood’s Marissa Venture scored 28 points and passed the 1,000-point mark for her career in the Rockets’ victory. Ventura was backed by Baylie Starcher with 13 points, Madyson Cikosh with 14 rebounds and Abigail Nay with four assists.

Maplewood led 13-7 after one quarter, 33-13 at halftime and 39-16 after three quarters.

Girard was paced by Abbie Rafferty with 10 points and Sieasia Triplett with eight markers.
