Soccer, volleyball in districts this week

Four top-seeded teams are among the two dozen or so area high school fall sports teams headed into district tournaments this week, battling for regional — Sweet 16 — berths in their respective sports.

Springfield is the No. 1 seed in Division III girls soccer, Mineral Ridge is No. 1 in Division IV volleyball, and Crestview has two top seeds, in Division III volleyball and in Division III boys soccer.

This week’s schedule includes district semifinals in girls soccer tonight with district championships and regional berths determined on Thursday.

Tuesday’s district semifinals are in Division I volleyball and Divisions II and III in boys soccer. All of those district finals are scheduled Saturday.

Volleyball Divisions II, III and IV play district semifinals on Wednesday, along with Division I boys soccer. Again, those district finals all are scheduled Saturday.

Area teams still competing in girls soccer besides Springfield are Canfield (No. 2) and Niles (No. 13) in Division II, and South Range (No. 2) and Ursuline (No. 4) in Division III.

Division III boys soccer teams still playing this week besides Crestview are Cardinal Mooney (No. 2), South Range (No. 4), Ursuline (No. 5) and Columbiana (No. 7). Poland, third-seeded in Division II, and Fitch, the 16th seed in Division I, also are still in contention.

In volleyball, Fitch (No. 4), Canfield (No. 6) and Boardman (No. 15) remain in the tournament in Division I. Girard (No. 4), West Branch (No. 7) and Hubbard (No. 15) are still playing in Division II, and South Range (No. 5) and Cardinal Mooney (No. 16) join Crestview in Division III.

Mineral Ridge is joined by three others in Division IV — Western Reserve (No. 3), Columbiana (No. 5) and Heartland Christian (No. 6).
