Local golfers finish first day at state

McDonald’s Caleb Domitrovich shot an 83 and is tied with four other golfers for 24th place at the Division III boys golf state tournament Friday at NorthStar Golf Club.

Mineral Ridge’s Jake Sylak tied for 29th place with three other competitors with an 84.

Gilmour Academy’s Alex Winarski and Canton Central Catholic’s Alex Milavickas are tied for first with 72s.

In the Division II girls state tournament at The Ohio State University’s Gray Course, Cardinal Mooney’s Alyssa Rapp is tied with six other golfers with an 89.

Shaker Heights Laurel’s Jami Morris shot a 68 to lead the field.

In the Division II boys state tournament at The Ohio State University’s Scarlet Course, West Branch’s Aiden Wiesemann is tied with six other golfers with an 85 and in 32nd place.

Poland’s Luke Nord shot an opening-round 89 and is tied for 56th place.

Stephen Ma of Gahanna Columbus Academy leads the field with 71.

All the area golfers tee off in today’s final rounds at 10:50 a.m., except for Nord, who goes off at 10:40 a.m.

Girls tennis

AKRON — The area Division II girls tennis players ended their seasons in the first round of Friday’s district tennis tournament at the Springside Racquet and Tennis Club.

Top seeded Anna Morgione of Ursuline lost to Hathaway Brown’s Olivia Gidlow, 3-6, 6-4, 6-0. Gidlow advanced to Saturday’s semifinal and to next weekend’s state tournament.

Cardinal Mooney’s Marissa Landers lost to Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary’s Andie McKnight, 6-1, 6-1, while Struthers’ Daniella Mendel lost to Revere’s Morgan Dobbs, 6-1, 6-1.

Ursuline’s Lynn Chahine and Ella Kobak lost to Chippewa’s Ally Murphy and Grace Cunningham, 6-0, 6-0, while Struthers’ Ella Croyle and Emmah McConahy were beaten by Canton South’s Destiny Winans and Abigail Franks, 6-2, 6-0. The Canton South duo advanced to Saturday’s semifinals and the state tournament in Mason.

Poland’s Caitie Palusak and Julia Eich were defeated by Perry’s Nikki Rosati and Anna Fletcher, 6-2, 6-2.
