Area cross country runners have solid Saturday

CROSS COUNTRY

BILLY GOAT CHALLENGE: BAZETTA — Maplewood freshman Caleigh Richards won Saturday’s large-schools girls race in a time of 18:51.5, a school record for the young runner.

Howland sophomore Megan Hipple took third.

Howland’s boys took second in the large schools boys race with 88 points, edging Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin, which had 88. Howland won by the sixth runner having a higher place than ND-CL’s sixth runner.

Lane Goble led the Tigers with a third-place finish, while Canfield’s Nick Plant took fifth.

In the small-school race, the McDonald boys and Mineral Ridge girls won.

The McDonald boys won over Maplewood, 60-71, while Ridge beat out McDonald 44-71.

Mineral Ridge’s Sylvia Traw won the girls race in 21:01.0, while McDonald’s Brody Rupe took the boys race in 17:08.4.

McDonald’s Caleb Domitrovich, Maplewood’s Alex Donaldson, Mineral Ridge Timmy Pappagallo and Girard’s Ricky Marsico round out the boys top five, while McDonald’s Mariah Bregar, Cardinal Mooney’s Sylvia Tsarnas, Badger’s Brooke Polon and East Palestine’s Marissa Giess took the girls top five.

MENTOR CARDINAL CLASSIC: MENTOR — Boardman’s Frank Bero won the boys varsity race in a time of 16:16.43.

Boardman’s Beau Gorby was 17th (16:59.65), while Austintown Fitch’s Corbin Roby was 24th.

On the girls side, Boardman’s Raegan Burkey was third (19:15.30) and Boardman’s Julia Gorby was sixth (19:39.31).

LATE FRIDAY FOOTBALL

¯ BOARDMAN 27, EAST 7: BOARDMAN — Junior quarterback Terence Thomas accounted for 231 of Boardman’s 281 total yards as the host Spartans downed the Golden Bears for their first win of the season.

Thomas ran 14 times for 181 yards, including an 8-yard touchdown and tossed two touchdown passes in the first quarter, including a 31-yarder to Luke Huzicka to open the scoring.

Cameron Atwood scored on a 39-yard run in the first quarter for East, which fell to 0-2.

¯ SPRINGFIELD 31, WESTERN RESERVE 0: BERLIN CENTER — The Tigers won their 17th consecutive regular-season game with a huge win over Western Reserve.

Springfield got on the board in the second quarter off a 23-yard field goal from Clayton Medvec.

Quarterback Beau Brungard ran for 131 yards and threw for 179 yards in the win. Clayton Nezbeth ran for 54 yards and two touchdowns.

Western Reserve’s David Altiere had 149 all-purpose yards.

Western Reserve (1-1) travels to Mineral Ridge, while Springfield (2-0) hosts McDonald.

¯ WEST BRANCH 49, MINERVA 13: MINERVA — Brock Hillyer put up a dominant performance for the Warriors in a huge win over Minerva.

Hillyer accounted for six of West Branch’s seven touchdowns, running for five, and passing for one more.

Hillyer ran for 152 yards and threw for 230.

Alex Wilson had a one-yard run for the Warriors in the fourth quarter.

West Branch (2-0) hosts Alliance next.
