Friday’s severe weather affected the scheduling of several high school football games on the first weekend of the 2020 season which already promises to be an unusual campaign, due mostly to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The result is that today’s schedule is much more crowded than a typical Saturday during the high school football season.

Even before Friday’s weather, a couple of games — Harding at Cleveland Heights and Jackson-Milton at Lowellville — had been moved to Saturday.

The Raiders had to react when Cleveland Heights decided it could not play. Harding picked up a home game with Cleveland Benedictine, but had to play Saturday since Kennedy already was scheduled at Mollenkopf Stadium.

Jackson-Milton and Lowellville originally were scheduled for Thursday, but when Lowellville made the move — because of COVID seating capacity protocols — to play its home games at Campbell, a scheduling conflict moved the game to Saturday.

Early Friday afternoon, the weather forecast resulted in several games being rescheduled for Saturday — Springfield at Mineral Ridge, Fairport Harbor at Mathews, Ashtabula St. John at Chalker, Windham at Pymatuning Valley, United Local at Columbiana and Southern Local at Leetonia.

Then, on Friday night, a handful of other games were postponed on site, including Boardman at Fitch, Liberty at Brookfield and LaBrae at Campbell.

¯ HUBBARD 14, STRUTHERS 7: HUBBARD — The ground game dominated the night with Hubbard coming out on top 14-7.

The Eagles rushed for 340 yards compared to the Wildcats’ 214.

Struthers (0-1) struck first with Aiden Hall breaking out for a 91-yard rush for a touchdown midway through the first quarter.

Tim Caffey was the hero for Hubbard (1-0) rushing for 119 yards and both of the team’s two touchdowns.
