COVID halts football teams

Seven area high school football teams are currently on a hiatus after a positive test of COVID-19.

Niles, McDonald, Poland, Boardman, Youngstown East, East Palestine and Chaney all were forced to suspend operations over the last few weeks because a player or staff member tested positive for the virus.

Niles was the most recent team to join the growing list. The school district announced Tuesday it was suspending practices for 14 days after a player tested positive.

Boardman will resume its practices today, the school announced Tuesday. After a player tested positive for the virus, practice was suspended Monday and Tuesday. It will resume after contact tracing for COVID-19 was completed by the Mahoning County Board of Health.

McDonald won’t return until Aug. 17. The Blue Devils started their break Aug. 3.

Chaney and East return today, while Poland is tentatively waiting until Aug. 17.

East Palestine began its break Aug. 9 and expects to return Aug. 19.
