Contact sports can resume practice this coming Monday

On May 26, the state of Ohio and the Ohio High School Athletic Association gave the all clear for sports to begin conditioning.

Precautions were taken as part of Phase 1 by the state government in the gradual restart due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This was after winter sports were halted in mid March and spring sports followed suit later that month. Both were canceled in April.

Lt. Gov. Jon Husted announced Thursday contact practice for all sports can begin on Monday as part of Phase 2. The decision is up to each school district, he said, noting that updated state mandated guidelines should still be followed.

Football, lacrosse and other contact sports can resume scrimmages and full training regiments as long as safety protocols are observed.

These protocols are to be followed from coronavirus.ohio.org:

¯ According to the state of Ohio, players, coaches, officials athletic trainers, and officials must conduct daily symptom assessments. Anyone experiencing symptoms must stay home.

¯ Athletic trainers must wear a face covering when attending to an injured player, preferably a medical-grade mask, except for a couple of exceptions.

¯ Promote good hand hygiene and respiratory etiquette. Flyers and signs are available at coronavirus.ohio.gov.

¯ Identify players at higher risk of developing serious complications from COVID-19, such as those with asthma, diabetes or other health problems and take extra precautions to protect them.
