Ohio High School Athletic Executive Director Jerry Snodgrass did not make any official cancellations when he addressed on Thursday the state’s postponed winter state tournaments and the spring sports season, which are both in limbo because of the statewide closure of schools during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Snodgrass spoke to a limited media gathering and to an online audience. The OHSAA had encouraged school administrators, athletic directors and coaches to watch the news conference.

Snodgrass emphasized that many of the OHSAA’s eventual actions will be affected by those of Gov. Mike DeWine and the state’s health authorities.

Snodgrass said he and his staff have been examining all possibilities regarding the resumption of play since the start of the coronavirus threat. Currently, a three-week “no contact” policy involving athletics is in place until schools are slated to resume April 6.

The commissioner cited a number of factors that would make it “almost impossible” to reschedule the winter sports — boys and girls basketball, wrestling, ice hockey — postseason tournaments. He said it is possible a decision could be coming within 48 hours.

Snodgrass estimated that the OHSAA, a nonprofit organization, will lose in the neighborhood of $1.5 million by canceling its winter tournaments.

About spring sports, Snodgrass said it depends on how soon, or if, classes resume.
