Spartans returning to state

The Boardman High School girls bowling team qualified for the Division I state tournament by placing fourth in the district tournament Sunday at Stonehedge Lanes in Akron.

The top five teams and top five individuals not on a qualifying team advanced to state and compete Saturday, March 7 at Wayne Webb’s Columbus Bowl. It will be the Spartans’ fifth time competing at state as a team and first time since 2015.

Boardman had a 3,492 total pinfall, which included five individual three-game series and six Baker games.

The Spartans finished behind champion Perry (3,639), Norton (3,622) and Canton McKinley (3,537) and ahead of Tallmadge (3,441).

Junior Josalyn Hibbard rolled a 621 (264-172-185) to place fourth overall and sophomore Sam Hoffman posted a 556 (197-222-137) to place 11th of 105 total competitors. Lexus Petrich, the only other Spartan to bowl all three games, had a 471 (135-192-144) to tie for 50th.

Howland placed 16th (2,956) in a 17-team field. Competing as an individual, Niles’ Shyana Beers rolled a 502 (156-189-157).
