Local swimmers in hunt for state titles

CANTON — Howland junior Jared Mindek and West Branch senior Jamyson Robb are in line for 100-yard breaststroke state championships in Division II after Thursday’s state preliminaries at the state swim meet at the C.T. Branin Natatorium.

Robb, who is committed to Liberty University, broke her own state record Thursday with a time of 1:01.27, down from the previous fastest of 1:01.38. Robb won this event last season.

St. Clarisville sophomore Casadie Dibetta was second on Thursday with a time of 1:02.61. Hawken junior Sydney Bare was third (1:03.39).

The finals in Division II start today at 5 p.m., with the B finals where those who took ninth through 16th in preliminaries compete in those races. The A finals are for those who took one through eight in preliminaries and are vying for a state championship.

Robb was third in the 200 individual medley (2:05.20). Hawken’s Jessica Eden has the fastest time with 2:00.90, while Kettering Archbishop Alter’s Kate Lair was second (2:04.20).

Mindek, who took fifth in last year’s 100 boys breaststroke, is second after preliminaries with 56.24. Bowling Green’s CJ Layne has the fastest time at 56.03.

Canfield senior Matthew Peckman took eighth in the boys 50 freestyle (21.69). He is .46 seconds out of second place.

Division I state preliminaries begin this morning.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

¯ SOUTHEAST 44, GIRARD 37: RAVENNA — Poor free-throw shooting and a rough second half kept sixth-seeded Girard from upsetting the third-seeded Pirates in a Division III sectional bracket final.

The Indians took a 12-3 lead and then held a 23-17 edge at halftime, but they shot just 11-of-27 from the free-throw line and were outscored 27-14 in the second half.

Lindsay Cave scored a team-best 15 for Girard (13-11), and Jalaya Brown added 11 points.

Rachel Neer scored nine of her 16 points in the third quarter for the Pirates (18-5). Southeast held a 15-7 advantage in the third to take a two-point lead going into the fourth quarter. They closed the game out with a 12-7 edge.
