Canfield, Poland win to set up 3rd meeting

¯ CANFIELD 58, SALEM 53: CANFIELD — The Cardinals rallied back from a 44-38 deficit in the fourth quarter to get the win over a scrappy Salem team.

Canfield outscored the Quakers 20-10 to push back after being outscored by 10 in the third quarter.

Leading the charge for the Cardinals was Brayden Beck who had 24 points. Joe Bruno added 14 points.

Drew Weir led Salem with 18 points.

Canfield will get its third crack at Poland on Friday.

¯ POLAND 52, NILES 28: POLAND — The Bulldogs’ defense shut down Niles, and fifth-seeded Poland eventually pulled away in the second half of a Division II sectional first round clash between a pair of Northeast-8 foes.

Michael Gordon was the only player to score in double figures for Poland (17-6), but 10 Bulldogs scored overall. Poland also held the Red Dragons to 10 first-half points and led 19-10. The Bulldogs stretched their lead to 16 in the third quarter and held Niles to 11-of-46 shooting for the game.

Doug Foster scored a game-high 12 points for the 12th-seeded Red Dragons (5-18).

¯ CARDINAL MOONEY 55, EAST PALESTINE 35: YOUNGSTOWN — The Cardinals held East Palestine to 14 points in the first three quarters to keep their season alive and advance to the second round of the tournament.

Mooney held a 39-14 lead heading into the fourth quarter and held off the Bulldog offense who scored 21 points.

Leading for the Cardinals was Dev Jenkins who scored 25 points.

Johnathan Bertovitch scored 18 points to lead East Palestine.

¯ SOUTH RANGE 62, ROOTSTOWN 36: NORTH LIMA — South Range dominated the first half and cruised to a Division III sectional first round victory over the Rovers.

The Raiders (15-8) started on a 14-2 run and put the game out of reach with a 21-8 advantage in the second quarter. Chris Brooks scored a game-high 19 points for South Range, while Kris Scandy added 13.

South Range hosts the winner of United and Canton Central Catholic on Friday.

¯ LOWELLVILLE 61, LEETONIA 26: LOWELLVILLE — The Rockets are on to the second round of the Division IV playoffs after taking down Leetonia.

Lowellville got to a commanding lead, going into the half with a 47-13 advantage.

Vinny Ballone led the Rockets with 17 points. Both Johnny Michaels and Anthony Lucente each scored 16 points.

Ian Davis led the Bears with 12 points.

Lowellville moves on to face Mathews.

¯ LISBON 48, WESTERN RESERVE 43: LISBON — Western Reserve saw its season come to an end in a heartbreaking loss to Lisbon.

Western Reserve held the advantage in three out of the four quarters but were outscored in the second quarter 13-4.

Noah Klasic led the team with 15 points and Ryan Gordon added 12.

Lisbon advances to face Sebring in the sectional finals.

¯ JACKSON-MILTON 44, HEARTLAND CHRISTIAN 40: NORTH JACKSON — Cole Grope scored 21 points for the Blue Jays in a close win over Heartland Christian.

Jackson-Milton played from behind going into the fourth quarter, heading into the final period trailing 35-25, but outscored the Lions 19-5 to take the lead and get the win.

Grope’s 21 points was a game-high and Mason Robison added 11 points.

The Blue Jays take on McDonald next.

¯ VALLEY CHRISTIAN 46, WELLSVILLE 43: WELLSVILLE — The Eagles mounted a fourth quarter comeback to get the win over Wellsville and keep their season rolling.

Valley Christian scored 13 points in the fourth quarter to retake the lead and get the win.

Lohron Brown led the Eagles with 19 points and Mark Revere added 14.

Valley Christian travels to Salineville to take on Southern Local in the second round of the tournament.

¯ LIBERTY 55, CONNEAUT 50: LIBERTY — Liberty put together a strong third quarter to inch ahead of the Spartans and held on for a Division III sectional first round victory.

The seventh-seeded Leopards trailed, 27-26, to No. 10 Conneaut before a 15-10 advantage game them a lead they didn’t relinquish. Three players scored in double figures for Liberty (8-15), led by James Davis’ 17 points. Jameer Weaver followed with 14 points, and Rashad Chambers put in 11. The Leopards play at second-seeded LaBrae at 7 p.m., Friday.

Delaunte Lane scored a team-high 12 for Conneaut (9-14).

¯ MINERAL RIDGE 83, JEFFERSON 60: MINERAL RIDGE — Mineral Ridge erased a halftime deficit and stormed past the Falcons with a barrage of 3-pointers in a Division III sectional first round matchup.

The eighth-seeded Rams, who trailed 32-28 at halftime, sank 14 from long range. Miles Culp led the way with five 3s and a game-high 26 points. Austin Governor was close behind with four 3s and 23 points. They helped Mineral Ridge outscored Jefferson, 55-28, in the second half.

Brock Bean paced the No. 9 Falcons (9-14) with 16 points.

¯ AQUINAS 60, CRESTVIEW 49: LOUISVILLE — The Rebels fell into a hole early and couldn’t climb back out in a loss to Aquinas in a Division III sectional first round matchup.

Crestview trailed 21-10 after the first quarter and rallied back, but couldn’t complete the comeback in time.

Drake Golden led the Rebels with 15 points and Kirkland Miller added 13.

Crestview ends their season with a 7-16 record.
