Canfield does more with less

Coach Jamie Stahl said her Canfield swim team has a simple motto — quality over quantity.

The Cardinals have eight boys and seven of them made today’s Division II district meet at Cleveland State University.

Connor Fritz, Ty Schaab, Luke Dietz and Matthew Peckman won the 200-yard medley relay, while Dietz, Cameron Burnett, Fritz and Peckman won the 200 freestyle relay. Dietz won the 200 freestyle.

Three sectional champions. Not a bad ratio for these Cardinals heading into today’s district. The top two in each event advance to state, while at-large qualifiers are from each of the four districts around the state.

Canfield has plenty of top-10 sectional times coming into today’s district, starting at 3 p.m.

“The fact that seven of them qualified for districts is huge,” Stahl said.

The Cardinals girls compete Saturday at noon at CSU in the Division I sectional.

There are 15 on the Canfield girls team and eight qualified for districts.

The Cardinals have four events in which they have top-10 times from districts.

“This year was one of the largest district team for the girls in 10 years to have all three relay, nine individual events and a diver,” Stahl said.

Canfield hopes this year’s success means more growth for next year’s program.

The Cardinals have swimmers come out for their youth programs, but when those prospective swimmers get to middle school they may choose other sports.

“I’m hoping we start to see some growth there,” Stahl said.
