Area swimmers at state meet
CANTON — Howland junior Jared Mindek took third in the Division II boys 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 56.31 seconds.
He finished fifth in that event last season at the state swim meet at the C.T. Branin Natatorium.
Meanwhile, Canfield’s Mat-thew Peckman took sixth in the boys 50 freestyle (21.62) to lead the Cardinals.
The Canfield 200 medley relay was 12th in 1:39.89, while the 200 freestyle relay was 10th in 1:29.61.
Peckman was 16th in the 100 freestyle (49.26), while Mindek was 14th in the 200 individual medley (1:59.01).
Division I boys
Boardman senior Noah Basista is competing for two state championships today as he swam the fifth-fastest time in Division I boys 100 breaststroke in 56.24. He is less than a second out of second place.
He had the eighth-fastest time in the 100 butterfly (49.93). Like the 100 breaststroke, Basista is less than a second away from second place.
The A finals, where Basista is swimming, and B finals start at 4 p.m., today.
The Boardman 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay teams are in the B finals. The boys medley relay went from 21st place from districts and vaulted to 12th in the B finals.
