Mooney girls headed back to state

Cardinal Mooney placed second in the Division II District Tournament at Sable Creek in Hartville and is the only area team to qualify for the state tournament after finishing just shy of first place.

The Cardinals tied with first-place Marlington, with both scoring 355, but were beaten out in the tiebreaker.

Jayne Bernard and Alyssa Rapp were the top performers for Mooney, each shooting an 84 across 18 holes. Alexandria Patrone shot a 90, placing in 16th, Grace Ogden shot a 97, placing 33rd and Daniella Patrone shot a 142 placing 72nd.

Poland was the next area team up, finishing in sixth place. Carly Ungaro shot a 91, finishing in 19th place. Jackie Grisdale placed 24th shooting a 94 and Sophia Yurich finished 29th with a 96.

Champion finished seventh. Allison Smith led the way with a 91, also finishing 19th. Kylie Gardner finished 26th, shooting a 95.

Rounding out the top 10 was Hubbard, which scored a 409. Jackie Adler led the Eagles, finishing 16th and shooting a 90.

Madison Horvath of Springfield was the only local player to qualify for state individually. Horvath shot an 88, placing 13th.

The state tournament will be held Oct. 11 and 12 at Ohio State University Golf Club in Columbus.
