YSU comes back to best Jags

There was little that could stop the Youngstown State men’s basketball team in the second half on Friday night.

The Penguins dominated the final 20 minutes to beat IU Indy 85-76 at Beeghly Center in Youngstown.

YSU (11-12, 4-8 Horizon League) registered its first win after trailing at halftime and its the largest come-from-behind victory so far this season.

IU Indy led by 10 points on Friday, but they couldn’t hold it. The Penguins prior largest deficit overcome came in a 69-68 victory after trailing Wright State by six on Dec. 3.

YSU was 12-of-20 (60%) shooting in the second half, and it outscored IU Indy 51-37.

Both offense had some success early on. But IU Indy attacked the paint, scoring eight of its 11 points from the interior in the first 4:35 of action.

Meanwhile, it took a bit for the Penguins to get into a flow due to turnovers. Through the first 11 minutes, they gave the ball away seven times. Those lead to eight points for IUI, which led 23-15 at that point.

An 8-0 run by the Penguins cut the deficit to 30-28 with 4:17 to play in the first half. But coming out of a timeout, the Jaguars went on a 7-0 run of their own.

That response by IU Indy (6-18, 2-11 HL) was enough to give the visitors a 39-34 advantage heading into the locker room.

YSU went on a 10-0 run toward the middle of the second half to take a 55-53 lead. Imanuel Zorgvol gave the Penguins the lead on an alley-oop bucket at the 11:10 mark, and the Penguins were right back in the game.

That was part of 18 straight points for YSU. And in less than four minutes, it turned a eight-point hole into a 63-53 lead.

Then foul trouble put the Penguins in position to get some easy points. They went into the double bonus with 6:11 left when the game was tied at 66.

YSU clinched the win by going 13 for 14 from the free-throw line down the stretch to prevent any chance of a Jaguar push.

Cris Carrol and Bryson Dawkins both scored 18 points to lead the Penguins. Dawkins also had team-highs with nine rebounds and seven assists.

Junior Tae Blackshear was efficient, adding 14 points in 17 minutes. He was 3-of-4 from the behind the 3-point line.
