Hansen wins Northern Ohio PGA Section Championship

CANFIELD — Toledo Country Club head golf professional Jaysen Hansen shot a 3-under 69 during Wednesday’s final round to win the 75th Professional Championship by three strokes at Tippecanoe Country Club.

It’s Hansen’s second Northern Ohio PGA Championship victory, having won previously in 2020.

Despite leading the tournament after the first round on Monday, Warren resident Jon Jones, the assistant golf pro at Youngstown Country Club, shot a 5-over 77 during Wednesday’s final round and finished in seventh place at 4-over overall.

Youngstown resident Dennis Miller, a lifetime member of the PGA of America, finished one shot behind Jones in eighth. He posted a 1-under 71 on Wednesday to finish at 5-over for the tournament.

Rounding out the locals, Youngstown’s Sean Patrick, the assistant club pro at Tippecanoe, came in 22nd place at 13-over for the championship.

Hansen was the only player in the final field of 28 to shoot three straight sub-par rounds, which gave him a 54-hole score of 7-under 209 and a three-shot victory over three-time champion Jim Troy, an instructor at The Golf Dome. While this was Hansen’s second win in this event he has qualified for the national stage 17 times.

The top five players in the Section tournament qualify for the 58th PGA Professional National Championship next April in Bandon, Oregon at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort. Four alternate spots were also awarded.

Northern Ohio PGA Championship is the last event used to determine the regular division Northern Ohio PGA team for the 29th Ohio Cup Matches.

The top nine point leaders and one captain’s choice in the Regular Division and the top five and one captain’s pick in the Senior Division will make up the Northern Ohio PGA team when it takes on the Southern Ohio PGA squad at Wedgewood Golf and Country Club on Oct. 7-8 in Powell, Ohio.

Starting at $3.23/week.
