Ursuline looking into reported behavior during football trip

Ursuline is investigating a report of “inappropriate behavior” from members of its football team during a recent team trip.

WFMJ was the first to report on the investigation Tuesday morning.

Three Irish coaches took 41 players on a nine-day trip to various college football camps from June 12-20. Those colleges were Tennessee, South Florida, Florida State, Florida, Alabama and Auburn.

The Youngstown Police Department is handling the case, according to Dennis Biviano, public relations and media specialist for the Diocese of Youngstown.

Biviano said no further information can be provided at this time.

Ursuline principal Matthew Sammartino released a statement to Ursuline parents on Monday. His full statement is below.

“At Ursuline High School, the safety, well-being, and character development of our students are our highest priorities.

“We are currently investigating a report of inappropriate behavior involving members of the football team during a recent team trip. As always, we take concerns about student conduct very seriously and are committed to addressing them in alignment with our school’s code of conduct and the values we strive to instill in every student. Parents of the students directly involved have been contacted, and we are working with the appropriate authorities to ensure a thorough and fair review of the situation.

“In recent days, there has been increased attention on social media, including the sharing of blatant misinformation and speculation. We understand how difficult it can be when questions arise and answers are limited due to the need to protect student confidentiality during an active investigation. We respectfully ask for your support in speaking with your child about the importance of avoiding rumors, maintaining respect for others, and demonstrating leadership during challenging times.

“We are committed to transparency and accountability and will provide updates when we are able to do so appropriately.

“Thank you for your continued partnership and understanding.”
