OBERLIN — The offense got going early for the Warren JFK baseball team. Unfortunately for the Eagles, it didn’t continue.
Kennedy fell 4-3 to Tiffin Calvert in a Division VII regional final on Thursday at Oberlin College. The Senecas scored the final four runs of the game over the course of the sixth and seventh innings to end Kennedy’s season.
“Couldn’t add on, and you’re playing with fire when you play a good ballclub like that,” Warren JFK head coach Jim Ciambotti said. “That cost us in the end. We had some opportunities to cash in.”
The Eagles (18-9) scored all their runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Landon Snyder singled to lead off and Andrew Lapolla was hit by a pitch to put the first two runners on for the Eagles. Michael Bartoe put the first run on the board with an RBI single and advanced to second on the throw into the infield.
Dom Ryan walked to load the bases with nobody out. Then Taggart Carfangia singled to center to drive in a run. The throw went into the Kennedy dugout, allowing an unearned run to score and putting JFK up 3-0.
Kennedy pitcher Freddy Bolchalk worked out of a couple potential big innings throughout the day.
Cameron Moyer got the first hit for the Senecas in the second inning, and a single by Charlie Palm and an error in the outfield put runners on second and third with one out. But Bolchalk got a lineout and a strikeout to get out of the jam.
Calvert got a base runner in scoring position in the third and fourth, but again Bolchalk stranded the runners.
The Senecas (27-3) finally broke through in the top of the sixth.
Vincenzo Lyons reached on a fielding error to start the frame, and AJ Shoemaker dropped a lawn dart onto the right-field line to get the first two runners on base. The middle of the Calvert order came to the plate, and Connor Moyer got the Senecas on the board with an RBI single to center.
Cameron Moyer drove in a second run for Calvert with an RBI single to center. But the throw to third base skipped into foul territory, allowing the tying run to score. Cameron Moyer was bunted to third for the first out, but Snyder grabbed a ground ball from behind the pitcher’s mound with the infield in and threw him out at home plate.
In the bottom of the sixth, JFK’s Trevin Rinck reached on a fielder’s choice. He moved to second on a ground ball, but he was thrown out at home plate trying to score on a throwing error.
Calvert took the lead in the seventh when Palm reached on a fielder’s choice and scored on a soft liner to right by Shoemaker with two outs.
The Eagles went down in order to end the game.
“It hurt us in the beginning of the year, not cashing in on key hits, and it bit us today,” Ciambotti said. “But I’m proud of these guys. Nobody gave us a chance with what we lost and everything, but I’m proud of these guys with what they achieved.”
Bolchalk took the loss after a strong outing. He allowed four runs — three earned — on nine hits. He struck out three in the complete game.
“He’s a bulldog, he’s a competitor,” Ciambotti said. “We’re gonna miss him, this program. He’s taken the ball all four years in big ball games. Just came up a little short today.”
The Eagles will have the majority of their team back next season. They only lose four seniors, but the group of Carfangia, Ryan, Bartoe and Bolchalk make up half the JFK starting lineup.
Ciambotti acknowledged the impact of his core four and the careers they put together over the last four years, including another quality season this spring.
“We asked a lot of them as leaders, and they busted their rear ends,” Ciambotti said. “We practiced a lot, we asked a lot, we demanded a lot, and these guys did a tremendous job of leading.”
