Local ‘Fight Night’ set for Saturday

STRUTHERS — A 14-bout, all-amateur fight card, presented by Paolone-n-Burnside Boxing, is set for this Saturday night at iconic Struthers Field House.

Simply titled ‘Fight Night,” the card will feature Keith Burnside, Jr. of Struthers going up against Drew Mercer of Alliance in the 155 pound main event while Youngstown’s Golden String Boxing will send Darius Harshaw to the bell as he takes on Cleveland’s Shane Tyler in the 158 pound co-main attraction.

Nine boxers representing three local gyms will be featured on the card – five boxers hail from Golden String Boxing, Burnside Boxing Club has entered three hopefuls with Jack Loew’s South Side Boxing Club also represented – with fighters from Ashtabula (two), Alliance, Canton (two), Cleveland (four), Detroit (four), Erie, Pennsylvania (three) and Pittsburgh comprising the remainder of the card.

Returning to the Struthers Field House is special for local trainer and promoter, Keith Burnside, Sr.

“Back in the late 1970’s and early ’80s, I fought in the Youngstown Golden Gloves when they were held at the Struthers Field House and those who attended the fights back then can remember what a special time it was for everyone from fighter to fan,” Burnside said. “They later held the K.O. Drugs there but it has been a while since they hosted a fight card. To have my son on this card in our return to the field house is just so incredibly special for me.

“All fights are evenly matched and each boxer is chomping at the bit to get into the ring and get started.”

In the main event, Burnside, Jr., who is 23 years old, is trained by his father and a veteran of 12 fights while Mercer has six fights under his belt.

The co-main has the 20 year-old Harshaw, who is trained by Tom Cordel and Sam Calderone and with a half dozen fights to his credit, taking on Tyler, who is 23 years of age and entering the ring for just the third time in his amateur career.

Burnside A.C.’s other two fighters are Aiden St. Clair, who will get the show underway when he goes up against Nicholas Jackson in a 180-pound pairing while Austin Gibson welcomes Thulpigar Shammar of Detroit in a 147-pound scrap.

Jack Loew’s South Side Boxing Club will highlight Shaleer Cooke in his second-ever fight when he goes up against Joseph Gammon of Erie in a 165-pound match-up.

The other four local boxers all hail from Golden String and include Antwan Miller, John Davis, Yousef Hajjawi and R.J. Campbell.

Miller will meet Jacob Brown of Ashtabula at 156 pounds, Davis is set to take on Detroit’s Ali Aljehishi in a 138-pound pairing, Hajjawi will go up against Ali Chami, also of Detroit in a 165-pound matchup while Campbell is set to take on Khalil Cavitt of Canton in a battle of 30 year-olds at 175 pounds.
