Last-second shot propels South Range past Chaney

Rohan’s bucket gives Raiders a 48-46 victory

BEAVER TOWNSHIP — A last-second bucket by Luke Rohan propelled South Range over the top after a back-and-forth fourth quarter, taking down Chaney, 48-46.

“It was a one-score game last game too,” first-year Raiders coach Patrick Carden said. “These kids have been through it. Last year they were in nine one-score games that actually they all pulled out as victories, so it’s something that they’re used to and they know how to play with the game on the line.”

With time ticking away, the junior drove to the hoop off the inbound pass, and laid it in. Rohan finished the game with five points.

Landon Moore scored a game-high 22 points including 14 of the team’s first quarter tally of 16.

Moore missed a chunk of the second half and the Cowboys took every opportunity to inch their way back into the game. Despite the odds, the Raiders held strong.

“I think he had 18 or 20 and then he got a little banged up there in the third quarter,” Carden said. “But he was able to really finish it out, gut it out. Everyone really. Guys that haven’t rebounded well for us at this point were rebounding. Everyone battled.”

With Moore in the locker room, some early-season shooting woes plagued each team. Second-chance shots quickly became third and fourth-chances as scrums in front of the net formed.

The Raiders, still just a few weeks into a new system due to the football team’s success, struggled with turnovers, something that will change as they get more comfortable.

“Turnovers in the third quarter was a big one for us,” Carden. “We only had three points, turned the ball over a lot, and that just comes with time. They’re trying to play at a new pace they haven’t really played at, so we’re working through that, and then what passes (to make), which ones not to. The turnovers we definitely need to clean up.”

Despite the late start to the year, South Range sits at 2-1 on the season. With a tough schedule so far, a loss to Louisville, and a one-point victory over West Branch, things are looking optimistic as South Range gets comfortable as a unit.

Moore’s 22 led the Raiders, but Nate Lewis, who scored six, drained some crucial free throws down the stretch.

Leading on the scoresheet for Chaney was JeShaun Holcomb, who had 12. Austin Brown had 11 with three 3-pointers.

Two games into the season, the young Cowboys squad, which starts two sophomores and a freshman, sit at 1-1.

Just like on the other bench, Cowboys coach Marlon McGaughy is thinking about rebounding. With the scrums that were in front of the net on Saturday, pulling down rebounds was all the more important.

“I think we’ve got to be a lot more solid on defense and we’ve got to rebound,” McGaughy said. “Those second chance shots really hurt us.”

Chaney looks to recover on the road, with a tilt against Canfield on Tuesday.

The Raiders open up their league schedule on Tuesday with a tilt against Girard.
