Jack Loew’s boxing event ends with a bang

YOUNGSTOWN – Local trainer Jack Loew of South Side Boxing Club, has always been one to think creatively when it comes to boxing shows that he has either staged or promoted.

In his first ever show at Penguin City Brewing Company, which is in Downtown Youngstown, a lively crowd witnessed Saturday night’s show which featured a KO, four split and two unanimous decisions.

In the 125 pound main event that pitted two nationally ranked sluggers against one another, Akron’s Daben Figueroa scored a split decision over Danny Bodish, an up and coming hopeful who hails from the Quaker State.

Loew’s SSBC gym featured three of his boxers on the card, the team posting a 2-1 overall mark for their evening efforts.

The co-main event, which featured Loew protégé Antwone Peoples in a 200 pound pairing versus Samuel Figuero of Columbus, had Peoples earning the win after retiring Figuero at 1:48 of the second round.

Isaac Johnson, SSBC’s other winner, scored a unanimous decision over Damarion Swonden of Cleveland in a 140 pound scrap while Akron’s Dominic Ward was the other winner by unanimous decision, beating Loew-trained Ty Berquist at 145 pounds.

Three other split decisions included Pennsylvania’s Shawn Whitley over Giavoni Codena of Akron at 70 pounds, the fight that kicked off the night’s festivities, Cleveland’s Sundish Rai over Blaze Baker, also of Pennsylvania, in a 130 pound pairing and Khaine Charles of Canton, who earned a hard-fought win over Jordan Pledger of Akron in a 65 pound match-up.

70 pounds – Shawn Whitley (Pennsylvania) def. Giavoni Codena (Akron), split decision.

130 pounds – Sundish Rai (Cleveland) def. Blaze Baker (Pennsylvania), split decision.

140-pounds – Isaac Johnson (South Side Boxing Club) def. Damarion Swonden (Cleveland), unanimous decision.

145 pounds – Dominic Ward (Akron) def. Ty Berquist (SSBC), unanimous decision.

65 pounds – Khaine Charles (Canton) def. Jordan Pledger (Akron), split decision.

200-pounds, Co-Main – Antwone Peoples (SSBC) def. Samuel Figuero (Columbus), RSC, round 2 (1:48).

125 pounds, Main Event – Daben Figueroa (Akron) def. Danny Bodish (Pennsylvania), split decision.
