DC today breaks my heart

Change is not my best friend. Not since the day my family moved from Wisconsin to California when I was 8. Leaving the land of my grandmother, the skating rink and snowballs in winter, Lake Mendota and the tennis courts in summer, the community garden and all that seemed unfair. The Fourth of July parade for kids was pure Americana. I dressed as the Statue of Liberty. Ice cream never tasted better than it did then and there. Los Angeles seemed like paradise lost, with a smoggy sky in a child’s eyes. Grown-ups talked about the Manson murders. Take me back, please! That ...

Do your part to fight abuse of our seniors

Outgoing Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost sounded the alarm loudly and clearly earlier this year on the pervasive scope of pernicious abuse against senior citizens in our state and in our community. In remarks to the state’s Elder Abuse Commission, he reported that in the past seven years, Ohio has recorded a 400% increase in cases of reported elder abuse, which includes neglect as well as physical, emotional and sexual abuse, and financial exploitation. Even more astounding: In the vast majority of cases, the abuser knows the victim well. But here’s the rub: Only 1 in 5 cases ...

Letters to the editor

Poland residents work to beautify the village DEAR EDITOR: In June 2025, I stopped to talk with a woman tending the flowers on the bridge over Yellow Creek along South Main Street in Poland. During our conversation, I learned that for many years two dedicated volunteers — both named Laura — have quietly created and maintained the beautiful flower boxes that greet residents and visitors crossing our bridges. A few days later, I met Hugh Braham while he was walking across the same bridge. We began discussing ways to enhance the beauty of Poland Village in preparation for ...

Truth about Trump’s big birthday bash

In light of my recent Substack post about Trump’s plans for a Trump rally on the mall to celebrate the start of America’s 250th birthday festivities — designed, in his words, for “patriots” and promising to be “wild” — several of you wanted to know more about how it’s being planned and paid for. This year’s 250th anniversary events, commemorating America’s founders’ refusal to be bound by a tyrant, were supposed to be planned by a nonpartisan, nonprofit group created by Congress in 2016 via a bipartisan congressional caucus of more than 350 members. That ...

A nation full of suspects

Some of the recent legal challenges to the use of surveillance by the Department of Homeland Security upon Americans have resulted in the revelation of truly terrifying behavior by the government, in direct defiance of the Fourth Amendment to the Constitution. We now know that the federal government spies on innocent Americans without suspicion and without warrants. The spying seems to fall into several categories. The National Security Agency, which is in the Department of Defense, employs about 60,000 domestic spies. These are the folks who want us to believe that they go through the ...

Why Dems need an ‘Operation Kibble’

There's an ancient, almost surely apocryphal, story about a dog food company executive convening a big sales meeting. A very short version has the exec running through all of the company's advantages: the best sales team, the best advertising, the best packaging, etc. He then irately asks, "So why aren't we selling more dog food?" After a long silence, a small voice from the back ventures a guess. "Maybe the dogs don't like it." The story is a cliche, but a useful one, in business and politics. For instance, the pre-launch internal name for "Netflix" was "Kibble," as a reminder that ...
