Immigrants are not America’s enemies

DEAR EDITOR:

It’s been two years since l had some pretty fancy heart surgery and accompanying procedures and drugs that I’m certain are the reason I’m here to write letters to the editor. The people who did the work were by name, color and accent likely first generations of their families performing miracles here. Still, the “tough guy” (hah!) in the White House, his loyal immigrant attack dog and a would-be Gestapo adviser believe the only good migrants are deported migrants. I breathe to differ.

I do agree we need a secure border, more stringent amnesty requirements plus fast as well as just courts aplenty to quickly determine who comes in. We might have stepped toward that with a bipartisan bill on the subject, but Speaker of the House, mini MAGA Mike, refused to bring the bill to the floor for a vote. Donald Trump told him to kill it — because Trump needed an issue to campaign on. An issue easily skewed to make people fearful. An issue with defenseless scapegoats to turn the fearful against; migrants with no legal status and no money were just what the cowardly bullies needed. With his faithful and his haters distracted, self enriching deals could be made to our east, allies could be abandoned, bribes taken, science discarded. Corruption could flourish, and a growing catalog of outrageous lies used to convince the unwary, while much moolah became available to buy low intellects and lower characters as assistant grifters to felon 47.

Fortunately, more people are becoming aware that all Trump wants is everything that enriches or empowers him, country be damned. More than 1,200 showed up at the peaceful “NO KINGS” demonstration last Saturday. I was happy to be there with friends.

My heart swelled with pride but thumped as designed thanks to repairs made by immigrants. I hope more citizens will resist and then vote against Trump. He and his minions are the greatest threat to democracy inside our borders.
