Republican Party looks the other way on Trump

DEAR EDITOR:

I read “…worst, most corrupt and new low … ” in a 12/14 Vindy op/ed letter and thought someone else finally caught on to 45s true nature. Not so. The writer went on to label Biden with a MAGA fantasy, the tired “crime family” rant, standard red-hat fare that would have a greater ring of truth if about the family Trump. He left out bogus 45 pardons, convictions, debunked nonsense about the Big Lie and the attempted insurrection it incited. He missed that the Burisma “job” story was predicated on lies from a paid informant who has recanted them and is awaiting sentencing for his false testimony. He missed the fact that Biden has paid the back taxes he evaded. Trump once (under court order) paid back money he had stolen from the only charity he ever started, but has yet to show any remorse or take his medicine for a multi count criminal conviction and a number of civil court penalties.

When it becomes apparent even to the MAGA faithful that 47 is never going to do anything for anyone other than himself and a few billionaire buddies and some universally despised authoritarians, I think many red hats will become red faces. Maybe, if about at year two of his current regime, 47 begins to make noise about deserving an illegal third term or, perhaps, establishing a dynastic inheritance rule for his offspring to keep the profitable family chaos brand in power, there will be a great awakening. What an embarrassment for the GOP if they become “woke.”

On an adjoining page, Rich Lowry, an official GOP cheerleader, praised the strong start of 47. Since he is not yet in office, I guess it is at least a quick start to have named a virtual trainload of Cabinet appointees more than capable of replacing his former clown car and even less able to do the jobs for which they are nominated. Seems to me, though, that proven ability, intellect, sobriety, propriety and a lack of a criminal record should be minimal requirements. Trump struggles to find such people. Qualified folks tend to look a prospective boss in the eye, whereas Cabinet nominees apparently must present the back of their skulls as they bend to kiss the Don’s ring. Makes them tough to identify, even in some future lineup. Maybe they’re just emulating the GOP Congress.

Still, Trump is speeding ahead. He has planned to abandon the courageous people of Ukraine; Poland and NATO are next. He has a “concept” of health care ready for when he destroys Obama Care and Medicare and all reproductive care. He will try to persecute those who brought legitimate prosecutions against him based on grand jury findings while claiming those who followed the law should be imprisoned because he “thinks so”. He will avoid FBI vetting of his questionable nominees or open hearings for them until his lackey with an enemies list (anyone who resists Trump) bullies the agency. He has blessed ignorance of the antiestablishment clause and freedom of the press guaranteed by the First Amendment. And, he has discovered your savings, protected to $250,000 by the Federal Deposit Insurance Act, can be easily plundered if he replaces FDIC under the guise of reducing bureaucracy. Great start. Let’s all stand on the tracks, like deer in its headlight, so the clown train runs us over. Or await an unregulated Tesla in the street.
