Opening the ‘Slogan Window’ once more

DEAR EDITOR:

Since the electoral undertaking, every political race has had a slogan, a quick phrase, an expression of an idea, one’s belief, goal or objective, a means to convey their message quickly.

Without quoting them all, there is one used many years ago that I truly believe may apply to this current presidential election — read on.

Often used slogans used by candidates: “Save America” and “Time to Turn the Page.”

So, what exactly are candidates referring to, via these slogans? Let’s open the Slogan Window and take a peek.

“Save America”: The term save — to rescue from danger, an honorable position to take and if one is in need to be saved, well-accepted.

Personally, I don’t believe America needs saving, since its inception as a free nation, we’ve had our crises — wars, inflation, challenges — but through our democratic system of government, we’ve addressed them and came out a little stronger, more prepared for another, not a save but more of a safeguard strategy, maintaining the democracy we all enjoy.

Look at the candidate standing behind the Save America slogan. I’ve watched and listened to his lofty, often legally challenged strategy. How would he accomplish the saving of America?

All foreign conflicts will end immediately. Millions of immigrants will be deported. Oil drilling in the U.S. will be greater than ever. Incomes will skyrocket. Inflation vanishes. The middle class will prosper like never, ever before.

How would this be accomplished? Not sure, but taking away words we can speak, books we can read, personal decisions we can make and weakening environmental, community and workplace safety and health regulations doesn’t sound like a good plan to me.

“Time to Turn the Page”: The candidate is saying there is a need to move forward, not look back at any failed agendas, nonaccomplishments or the obvious division of America we’ve witnessed and experienced.

To accomplish this, we need to look at what makes America, America — Freedom, ensuring clean air and water, safe working conditions and schools. A means of progression, making us a stronger, more receptive America by allowing other opinions, disagreements to be heard and adequately addressed vs. simply ignoring them. Ensuring that our governmental system, which has worked for nearly 250 years, remains intact.

I support the moving forward position, turning the page strategy.

Now, for the slogan, which was used many years ago, that just may apply to today’s presidential election:

“In Your Guts, You Know He’s Nuts” — 1964 U.S. presidential campaign.

God bless America.
