What do Americans really want now?
DEAR EDITOR:
As I was watching the film “Field of Dreams” and flicking back to the Republican National Convention, I couldn’t help notice the parallels, or lack thereof, between the two. It got me, too, wondering what do Americans really want in life or for this election?
In the film, the man is losing his property and hears these voices asking him to build a baseball field in which “They will come.” This turns out to mean these awesome deceased baseball players will come to play ball when he eventually builds them the field. One of these players turns out to be his deceased father as his young self, and it hurts him that when he remembers his dad, he wasn’t this fun guy with wonder and excitement, he was a man that gave up his dreams and pushed around with life.
In the end, he gets to play ball with his dad, and it’s a dream come true. Family.
At the RNC, I see all of these signs: “America First,” “Make America Wealthy Again,” etc. I wondered, what do we really want? America means different things to different people. We’re greatest when we think of others, whether helping each other out, or our country is developing programs to help those in need. We are the big brother to our allies and unity doesn’t just include our country; it’s all that we can give a helping hand. We love our families and want what is best for them, but not at the expense of any of our freedoms. “Fight, fight, fight!” is not a mantra we need for our country; instead it should be the Golden Rule.
All people should read Project 2025 and realize the amount of your freedoms that will be taken. It’s scary. I have lived a nice long life, and this election truly is a game changer. I think when you get older you think about the types of things your children will inherit when you’re gone. I hope we can give them more love instead of coming after people because they are different from you. We all have something to share with each other. Look around you, we are beating the pandemic through which we lost thousands of lives and believe it or not, our economy is getting better.
I believe everything above and I trust that, if we open our eyes, we will get through this.
