Pleasure and distress while reading paper

I read the Vindicator daily, except Sundays, now. It gives me great pleasure and distress! I want to share some random thoughts:

• Wouldn’t it be great if the Biden administration — in fact, both parties in Congress — put as much effort into reducing the national debt as they do to reducing pollutants that are contributing to climate change? We stand at more than $34 trillion in debt. Both are a fundamental threat to our future.

*The Wednesday poll, “Is literacy a necessary life skill?”, had 98% say yes. What did you expect? Illiterate people don’t read the paper. They are not represented in the poll. Bravo to Governor DeWine for promoting reading development throughout all levels of our education system.

*The UAW criticizes Moreno for selling the China-made Buick Envision. He claims he suspended the practice several years ago when GM Lordstown closed. How many payrolls has Senator Brown created? If we didn’t have businesses that sell various products, we could be the foremost manufacturer of numerous goods, but to what avail? How many of those present at the union hall were wearing foreign-made (Chinese) clothes that they possibly bought for cheap prices at Walmart or Target?

• For those complaining about the end of a Sunday paper, face reality. First, thanks to the Tribune Chronicle stepping in, we still have a local newspaper, which I sincerely appreciate. Secondly, the elimination of the Sunday issue has not substantially reduced the value readers receive. All the various columns, ads and overall content are essentially intact in the Saturday edition. Finally, all of the major newspapers in Cleveland and Pittsburgh (and elsewhere) have sharply reduced their publishing frequency. We are fortunate to have The Vindicator still persevere. Count your blessings.

To clarify my opening lines, I should add, it is the news that brings me pleasure and distress. I am deeply grateful for The Vindicator’s ongoing efforts to keep our community informed, even if I don’t always agree with it. Thank you, even if we have to endure unpleasant changes.
