Sunday’s front page coverage of the deer hunt is what is fueling the goal of the park board in eliminating wildlife. Money talks at the expense of the animals trying to survive. No, they don’t just move somewhere else, there is nowhere that doesn’t have a land for sale sign. Do you want a golf course with pesticides, no animals and a park with paved trails, restrooms and parking lots or our treasured park with wildlife to enjoy?

The old GE location at the top of the Market Street bridge is ideal for Youngstown’s new safety building. Immediate freeway access to all directions and centrally located. It also would enhance the travel view into downtown

Wow, Mike Rulli is going to complete the wall. Will it be the portion that fell down after Trump’s buddies allegedly constructed it for free, or just the parts cut out for easy access thus far? Wall fans should look up Hadrian’s Wall, The Maginot Line, the Berlin Wall or the recent Israeli wall for other historical failures before throwing good money after grifted money. The solution is lawful governance not dumb structures.

I often wonder if Americans realize where Iran, Saudi Arabia, Venezuela and Russia get their wealth from? It’s oil. What happens when all of our cars have been converted to electric and we’re using solar panels and windmills to power our homes and businesses? Obviously, their terrorism becomes seriously reduced. So why would we want to continue to pump oil?

In our great country of 350 million citizens, is this the best we can do? Biden v. Trump? Won’t someone please step up?

If IVF embryos are now “children,” then they need a Social Security number and the parents can get the requisite tax credits. Once started, it then needs to be carried through. Too much of a slippery slope, and let’s hope it will not sustain.

It’s no surprise the Supreme Court overturned the Colorado ruling and will allow the former president to remain on their ballot. The newest court members know what will happen if they don’t kowtow to their master’s every wish. The Putin admirer is stacking the deck so he will win the 2024 election, whether he has the most votes or not. Our Founding Fathers, who fought so hard for democracy, are rolling over in their graves.

So now the Covelli Center (built with public funds) wants to get into sports betting and use additional public funds for their addition? I wonder how the casino, which has invested so much of its own money, in the area feels about that? About the same as Mill Creek Park spending public money for golf simulators to compete with businesses that have invested their own dollars and paid taxes only to have the public entities competing with them I suspect.

I see YSU is responding to EGCC students’ concerns and education. Maybe this would be a time for donors like Mr. Zoldan to step up and put egos aside and help these students and others in need.

A recent editorial stated that NTSB’s Jennifer Homendy told Congress that the decision to blow open the railroad tanks was unnecessary. While now called a confirmation by some, how are we to know this is not merely an opinion? Too bad the NTSB wasn’t there at the time to make their year-long snap decision. This will turn into just another Camp Lejeune, asbestosis, bureaucratic field day for the lawyers. Otherwise known as first responders.

As I get older, this hour back and forth totally messes with my inner-circadian rhythm. Why are we still doing this?!? It made sense maybe 220 years ago but now? Quit messing with my body’s inner clock. This sucks.

Since many professions, nurses, therapists, etc., have to take continuing education credits to maintain their status, perhaps state and federal employees should have to do the same. Maybe relearning civics, the constitution, the history of our country, honesty and integrity, could alleviate the current dysfunction that is plaguing our government, especially the infighting in the Republican party, sowing distrust in most Americans.

So we are stuck with another Trump-Biden matchup in November. When you think Trump can’t stoop low enough, he mimics Joe Biden’s occasional stuttering. I was angered beyond belief to hear Trump’s comments, yet warped people in the audience actually laughed and cheered. A friend years back in high school was bullied and almost took his life because he stuttered. Without question, Trump lost the 2020 election. God forbid if Trump wins in November will the election still be rigged?

President Biden’s State of the Union address was magnificent. The Republican rebuttal, delivered by the junior senator from Alabama, worried about many of the problems the President identified. The difference, the Republican offered no solutions. Like the blustering thumping of his empty chest by her party’s leader, she chewed the scenery throughout her empty faux drama of a word salad performance. Go Joe — my President!

March is the month to recognize social workers. This group of dedicated individuals works tirelessly to help others. They don’t make a lot of money in their profession but continue to work and contribute to make our world a better place for others. They work in hospitals, nursing homes, community organizations and other places to help those in need. I’d like to give a big shoutout to all the social workers in our area to say “Thank you.”

Kudos to History Across the Humanities at YSU for hosting bestselling author John Scalzi last week at the DeBartolo Hall. He spoke to a group of mainly hopeful science fiction writers about the ups and downs of writing in the 21st century. His lecture was entertaining and informative. He made me laugh out loud, which is an accomplishment. Nice to see culture coming to the Mahoning Valley, and the YSU campus looks great. I look forward to future collaborations.

Why all the fuss over solar panels in northeastern Ohio when the window for sunny days is short? Just install them on movable vehicles to be wheeled into place during June, July and August, then stored away again. Also, why all the hype for the April 8 total solar eclipse if Northeast Ohio’s reputation for cloudy days prevails? Bummer.

Officials in some local communities are saying that dispensaries, processors or cultivators of recreational marijuana are not “a good fit” for them. Yet, dozens of liquor licenses exist even though, of all the drugs being used in our society, alcohol has the strongest claim to the label ‘drug’ because of the prominence of its short- and long-term physical effects. Prohibition ended 90 years ago because Americans wanted their alcohol. Stop the hypocrisy.

Kudos and a greenhouse full of orchids to Seaborn Elementary’s fifth and sixth grade Student Council for starting and implementing the Disconnect Club, its adviser for her guidance and support and all the students who are participating in the club. Let’s hope this serves as a model and spreads throughout the Weathersfield school district as well as all schools across the Valley.

The latest housing development on South Avenue has proven to be a disaster. Zoning laws have been violated by the company. Land was decimated and areas of disturbance were exceeded. Conditions were even worse on a second inspection. Boardman Township approved this permit with no regard to citizens’ opposition due to the ever-growing flooding and unnecessary development near their homes. Speak up to your trustees. Email or call the zoning inspector. No more development in Boardman.

Real estate taxes are the lowest-hanging fruit when it comes to taxes. When politicians in Columbus and other state capitals needed to make up for the 2017 tax cuts for billionaires and corporations, property taxes were the easiest way to make up the difference. Everyone needs a place to live so you either pay the increase or lose your home. It’s just another instance where the lower and middle class pays for tax cuts for the ultra-wealthy.

In America, they call it lobbying. Everywhere else in the world they call it bribery and corruption. Politicians should wear sponsor jackets like NASCAR drivers, then we would know who owns them.

I seldom read a Sound Off that makes me laugh but the three last week about Trump selling shoes did just that. Someone getting something for their money made me realize how much I’d like to see my tax money go toward something other than paying for noncitizens to stay in a hotel or be transported anywhere they wish to go. That I have no choice about, but I can decide whether or not to buy shoes.
