Before it’s too late, I’m hoping Mill Creek MetroParks will do the right thing and drop its attempt to take land from a Green Township individual for a bike trail. To me, it seems like someone on the park governing board has a personal agenda and plenty of taxpayer money. The question all property owners and voters should ask is: “Would I want a bike trail going through my property?”

Austintown

Mill Creek Metro-Parks is not the only area with deer overpopulation. Many suburban areas have this problem. They’re causing damage to property. One recently crashed into a school bus. Some folks want them left alone. I think instead of controlled hunting, we should reintroduce natural control. Wolves haven’t been seen in Ohio for about 200 years. They could control the population in a “green” natural way.

As a child growing up in the 1950s and ’60s, we never saw vultures flying here. We heard that they yearly return to Hinckley, Ohio. Now they’re pretty common here and are honest and fly majestically — unlike the ones that took over D.C. and are flocking to East Palestine.

Columbiana

Given the regularly changing attitudes of its governor toward the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Florida now has more flip-floppy species than anywhere outside of D.C. A lot of them are slimy.

Regarding police officers who died after the Jan. 6 Capitol riot due to heart attack, overdose, stroke and suicide, this is sensationalizing? Seriously? It’s a travesty and has absolutely nothing to do with political bias, as a writer from Poland wrote. It’s a sad loss of six human beings who left behind loved ones and whose lives were so impacted by this horrific and unnecessary event that the toll it took was their lives. When will that matter?

Poland

At the inauguration POTUS pledges “I do solemnly swear that I will faithfully execute the office of president of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.” The oath is defined in Article II, Section 1, Clause 8 of our Constitution. Our border is porous, crime and inflation are rising. Joe Biden’s administration is failing miserably. Sadly, that may be the best of his ability.

Canfield

Bail is unfair for poor people. The percentage of poor people who can afford bail is lower than that of higher income people. Innocent poor people can remain jailed for months or years before trial. They lose low-paying jobs; their families suffer financially and emotionally, pushing them deeper into poverty. Why not use electronic bracelets for first offenders? This can protect the public while defendants await trial. If not, maybe goals aren’t protecting public but keeping poor people down.

Campbell

It amazes me that people continue to support a man who threatens and vows revenge, supporting violence in need of his own ego. His lying and bullying are methods used by dictators worldwide. To see that this method is teaching our youth is sad. Yet, now banning books that have been read for

generations is being treated as acceptable, when this man breaks all rules.

Let us be realistic. Yes, deer are cute and fun to watch. Are they fun if they are diseased and starved? Of course not. Deer are part and parcel of the food chain. Let us harvest them and use them for all the food clinics like we do cows, pigs and chickens! Our ancestors lived off deer, and they were cherished for their sustenance, the same as buffalo. Let us be practical and responsible and take a grownup outlook!

For many years our community has been so generous to Diane Less and her dedication to animals. Maybe it’s time for her to give a little back to the community. She should let the

Columnist Froma Harrop stated police were killed in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot. The only individual killed was Ashli Babbit, shot by Capitol police. Two others died due to heart attacks; another from an accidental overdose. One Capitol officer died by stroke eight hours after being sprayed by a chemical irritant. Other later police deaths resulted from suicides. Some writers like to sensationalize and deliver slanted words. Don’t believe all that is written, especially when it is politically biased. Do your own research.

Gov. Ron DeSantis says Florida is where “woke” goes to die. This old term originally meant being aware of civil rights violations and violence against people of color and now includes broader topics like global warming. Culture warriors like DeSantis use “woke” as a dog whistle for everything from bank failures to nonexistent grade-school curricula to rally their base around book burnings, voter suppression, denial of women’s health care, etc., killing awareness of anything not approved by Florida’s fascist leader.

Conservative Washington, D.C., leaders preach deregulation, arguing it hurts business. They forget rules limit what man does because there’s always a percentage of people, rich or poor, conservative or liberal who push limits. Like kids, they need rules. Some speed, rarely give employees raises, ignore safety unless enforced. The people of East Palestine and depositors with Silicon Valley Bank recently experienced business leaders who risk citizens’ lives and economic well-being. We must remember when we vote for those who argue for deregulation.

A cashier verbally asking for donations to cancer research, food bank or countless other things is not right. It’s one thing for the customer to donate by privately hitting a button on the screen, but being asked in front of others is wrong. Some can’t afford to donate. Others already donate plenty in other ways. It is unnecessary and embarrassing at times! Half the time it is not even clear where this money goes!

Former President Franklin D. Roosevelt established the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation to ensure financial safety. In 2008, the Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act was signed into law by former President Barack Obama and rolled back by former President Donald Trump in 2018 with revised Economic Growth Regulatory Relief and Consumer Protection Act. Simplified, Trump’s 2018 bill exempted smaller banks (like Silicon Valley Bank) from stringent regulations, loosened rules big banks must follow. Most investors, officers and executives of the banks understood risky activity and should be held responsible.

Nero fiddled while Rome burned, but Biden lies while widening America’s racial divide. While in Selma, Ala., recently (likely to work on his 2024 presidential bid), Biden asserted minorities’ voting rights are under assault by a conservative Supreme Court that, he claims, is undermining a landmark voting law. Ha! Aren’t voting rights still in place? It’s lack of voting-control enforcement that’s the problem.

We’ve lived on Lockwood Boulevard for 32 years and were never bothered by deer until five years ago. Overpopulation has pushed them into surrounding properties. Landscaping that we’ve spent hundreds of dollars on and decades of planning, is now a smorgasbord for invaders. The road kill incidents along Lockwood prove they are a danger to human life. I pray that it doesn’t take a car accident resulting in injury or death to finally have this matter resolved.

Boardman

A group walking with vibrating phones and conversation couldn’t figure out why they couldn’t see deer in Mill Creek Park. Even a deaf deer can smell you. Rather than systematic kill of some deer with no natural predators, citizens should be concerned with the park’s destruction of natural habitat for a bike trail. The danger to cyclists from a deer has happened before. It’s one thing to have your car totaled by a deer you didn’t see coming. It’s another to be a paraplegic for the rest of your life.

Austintown

U.S. Sen. J.D. Vance looked like an idiot poking a stick in the creek and declaring it “disgusting” for a photo op. The governor seemed miffed at the news conference and had to reiterate that the section of the creek had been dealt with already by making dams above and below where Vance was. The new senator made a rookie mistake. He opened his mouth before he knew what was going on.

All the former president and carpetbagger did was see a campaign opportunity, evident by photos with the podium displaying his campaign sign. P.T. Barnum was famous for credit being attributed to him for the saying “There’s a sucker born every minute.” How many mass shootings did Trump appear at during his presidency? He didn’t take time to visit Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting site. Santa Fe? Rancho Tehama? None. They were school children who couldn’t vote for him.

An Article V convention will bring utter constitutional chaos to our nation. This is a plot funded by millions in dark money from the likes of the Kochs and Mercers. The goal is to give mega donors and corporations free rein to reshape our constitution against the will of the people by gutting rights like free speech, right to privacy and right to protest. Look into this movement and support the groups that will work to defeat it.

Poland

Congress is full of buffoons like George Santos and Marjorie Taylor Greene because voters choose candidates simply because they have an R or D next to their name, not because of their qualifications. Mitch McConnell was half right. He said we need better candidates, but we also need better and more informed voters.

The Dominion suit against Fox News revealed Tucker Carlson knew there was insufficient voter fraud in the 2020 presidential election, but still he pushed the big lie. Why lie to viewers? Because ratings equal money for him. Now he says the Jan. 6 rioters were tourists just visiting the Capitol, despite videos to the contrary, roughly 1,000 confessions and convictions for rioting in the capital, and injured police officers, etc. The truth hurts, but lies hurt more. Don’t believe lies.

Campbell

California has some of the most restrictive gun laws in our country, yet, we’ve seen mass shootings and violent crime continue at alarming rates. That’s because violent crime is about the criminal, not the weapon. Instead of creating more laws that make it more difficult for law-abiding citizens to purchase and possess guns, existing laws should be strictly enforced and violent criminals removed from our communities. It’s not “gun violence.” It’s violent crime.

Will people ever take a few minutes to educate themselves on an issue before expressing their views? One such issue is deer overpopulation in Mill Creek Park. I don’t agree with the park board on many issues, but they are not in the business of just killing deer. There is only so much food to sustain their numbers, so those numbers must be controlled. The park will survive, but many deer will not.

The wisdom of our parents should never be lost. My 85-year-old mother asked why Donald Trump would visit East Palestine? “Isn’t it Toxic enough?” Mother was a Reagan and Bush Republican. She voted for Romney and McCain. But not all old people are targets of a swindler. She’s a retired Packard Electric single mother who built a house on her own when women needed their husband’s signature to get a loan.

Trump said he “had nothing to do with” reversing safety regulations for trains, and he “doesn’t know anything about it.” If so, should he lobby “very strongly” in support of reinstating the regulations. How dare his administration manage this without his consent — and forged his signature!

• Campbell

To all East Palestine residents and others affected by the train derailment: My heart goes out to you! I wonder why a president wouldn’t visit to calm them! In 2020, candidate Biden chose to limit his in-person public appearances for fear of COVID-19. It seems plausible his inner circle has deemed East Palestine dangerous for an octogenarian to visit! As time passes, these advisers may permit his visit. Come on man! Give me a break!

• Sebring

Those railing that Joe Biden should visit East Palestine before Kiev would have sent FDR to carry coal to New Castle, not the Yalta conference. They are unaccustomed to an administration that can do more than one important thing at a time. It’s not important to hawk your failed line of bottled water amid an environmental disaster.

• Canfield

Stellantis justifies idling the Cherokee car plant in Illinois that it will make more costly EVs, therefore, labor must make sacrifices to help counter the cost! Why not continue making an economical, popular car? That doesn’t fit Biden’s agenda and allow Stellantis to do away with a UAW plant. Instead they want to follow General Motors to Mexico and push more illegal immigrants across our border. I quit supporting GM; now I won’t support Jeep. I support closing the border.

Disneyland in Florida supported LGBTQ, so Florida Gov. Ron DiSantis took over this longstanding company, and in sneaky maneuvers, passed a law that allowed him to do whatever he wanted. He is anti-vaccine, anti-gay, anti-black, anti-immigrant, even though the latter are needed in the Florida service industry. He is taking charge of college curriculums; he is not an educator. He does what he wants, and make no mistake, he will run for the presidency of the US.

Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers since 2008, earns $564,236 annually — five times the mean salary of teachers. The AFT’s mission is to champion high-quality public education. Although I disagree with CNN’s Don Lemon (that at 65 she must be past her prime), she is unworthy of her position leading the AFT. Ranked 14th worldwide in education, we spend more per student than any other country. A law of nature, that competition advances

performance, Weingarten and AFT fight school choice.
