Jan. 6, 2021, hearings are a political stunt

DEAR EDITOR:

Jan. 6 is being used as a political tool. The obvious evidence is that the select committee to investigate the January attack was populated by Nancy Pelosi.

Does anyone believe that this committee is after the truth? Do you recall the Trump-Russian collusion investigation? Robert Mueller’s probe cost nearly $32 million in taxpayer dollars. Result: no collusion. Democrats do not have a good track record on investigations! And they never investigate their own. Biased to a person, they select facts that suit their narrative and ignore facts that do not. What they are presenting has some truth, but not the whole truth. That’s worse than a lie!

Jan. 6 was a disaster; no argument there. But using the event to condemn Trump followers is disingenuous, to put it politely.

Let’s add some perspective. In 2020, President Donald Trump received 74,222,958 votes. The Secret Service and the FBI estimate 1,200 people (.0016 percent) entered the Capitol Building; 700 have been charged with a crime (.0009 percent). That is hardly a representative sample of Trump followers.

Democrats justify the money and intellectual capital focused on Jan. 6 by alleging that it threatens our democracy. It may be a threat, but it is by far not our greatest threat.

Thomas Jefferson’s writings, as well as other founders of our country, emphasize the importance of information. “A well-informed electorate is a prerequisite for democracy,” is a well-known quote. There is an obvious caveat: Information needs to be complete and factual.

Why was the Hunter Biden laptop story suppressed by

major media and Big Tech? The information contained cast a dark shadow over Joe Biden’s honesty and character. Surely that revelation would have influenced voters. The day after the election, Big Pharma revealed that COVID-19 vaccines were ready. Why the delayed announcement? President Trump is responsible for the vaccine’s unprecedented speed of development. Surely that information would have influenced voters.

Trump’s challenging of election results does not threaten our democracy. In fact, it is the norm following our elections. The largest threat to our democracy is the lack of trust in the media that withholds critical information from our electorate and the actions of the current administration. Porous borders, high crime and runaway inflation are threats to our democracy, as well as our way of life.

The Jan. 6 spectacle diverts us from real threats, further divides us and fuels hate.
