Let’s work to make all welcome in Canfield

DEAR EDITOR:

I am one of the few attendees of the Racial Equity and Diversity meetings who does not live in Canfield. When a close friend became pastor of a Canfield church, I was happy I would be able to see him more often, but apprehensive about coming to an area I believed was exclusive and possibly racist. I went anyway and learned that my preconceptions were arrogant and wrong.

The reason for RED is not that Canfield residents are “racist and bigoted and need some remedial guidance,” according to a Jan. 2 Vindicator letter to the editor. Rather, it is to dispel the narrative that not everyone is welcome.

Like it or not, that perception exists. A Youngstown police officer once told me he stays out of “Clanfield.” I know a mother who refused to allow her son to work at a fast food restaurant on U.S. Route 224 because she feared for his safety. I have heard drivers say they avoid Canfield so they don’t get a “DWB.”

The point is not whether these beliefs are justified — it is that they continue. Why should they believe otherwise if no one takes time to address their fears?

Those who feel Canfield has no problem with race, and those who do, ought to be united in wanting everyone to feel welcome. If RED can convince a few people that they are wanted in the community, the businesses and the churches, it will be a win for everyone.
