Is this the best our nation has to offer?

DEAR EDITOR:

This country was not founded, nor was it made great, by people looking to the government for a handout. The policies of the present administration are ruining this country. And the inflation fueled by this administration’s out-of-control spending will hurt every one of us.

I did not vote for Joe Biden. I also did not vote for Donald Trump. In the 2020 election, I voted for all local offices, but not for president. I was dismayed that out of 330 million people, those two candidates were the best we could come up with. (The Green and Libertarian parties did not have viable candidates.) But my purpose in writing is to comment on recent letters condemning the “Let’s go, Brandon” signs. I agree with those writers. While I might agree with the implied sentiment, I would never state it in the implied language. Maybe it’s from my time in the Army, but I believe the office deserves respect, even if the person does not.

But I want to remind everyone of something. During the debates last year, Joe Biden said to Donald Trump, the sitting president, in a nationally televised debate, “Will you shut up, man.” In a tone more suited to an argument in grade school, disrespecting the office he was trying to attain. That was not very classy, not presidential. Nothing was made of this in the media at the time. I do not understand why Joe Biden has continued to get a free pass from the television networks. As a person, Joe Biden is no more worthy of respect than Donald Trump. And if Mr. Trump did or said the things Joe Biden has recently, he would have been excoriated by the TV networks.

I want to end with a quote from Benjamin Franklin. “When the people find that they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic.”
