Continue virtual meeting attendance

DEAR EDITOR:

At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Ohio Statehouse passed legislation temporarily allowing Ohio public bodies to hold meetings and hearings virtually. Under the law, the public can listen to and provide testimony remotely using widely available video-conferencing technology. Public participation has increased under the change to virtual hearings, and the law was recently extended with bipartisan support through July 1, 2021.

Since it has been so successful, virtual participation in public hearings should continue beyond the pandemic. It increases public access and encourages involvement from a broader segment of the community that would not otherwise have the time or resources to attend. Government officials hear from more diverse parties, resulting in better public policy. In addition, less meeting space is required for virtual gatherings which reduces building-related costs and saves taxpayer money.

When the pandemic is over, Ohioans will regain the important right to attend public hearings in person. They should also retain the right to attend virtually. This is something on which elected officials and citizens on both sides of the aisle can agree. Let’s continue to use technology to improve our government.
