Old folks are sneaking out of their houses. Their kids are yelling at them to stay indoors. This morning I saw a neighbor talking to her dog. It was obvious she thought her dog understood her. I came home and told my cat. We had a good laugh. Stay away from those negative and spiteful people. Fact check and use common sense. The truth is important. Happy holidays.

I shudder at the thought of plaques everywhere in Mill Creek Park with names of donors. Giving money to your favorite charity is an admirable act. But I’ve always believed it should be low key instead of in your face. Just walk into the Canfield Library and look around. Tasteless.

With the election over, there are some somber facts that we, as a nation, must come to grips with. Donald Trump lost, and it’s time the nation came together and moved forward. There are many priorities we face, including the COVID virus. This must be the nation’s top priority in finding a vaccine to combat it. This enemy is much more important than who sits in the White House.

Since Attorney General William Barr’s own prosecutors cannot find any fraud in the current election process, perhaps he should investigate the White House.

The people have spoken! But, unfortunately, shenanigans by some Republicans and the commander in chief continue. Misinformation, lies about voting fraud, conspiracy and propaganda theories were spearheaded by Donald Trump and Rudy Guiliani. Lindsay Graham attempted to strong arm Georgia’s secretary of state into tossing out some absentee ballots. Jan. 20 cannot come soon enough. The virus is not a hoax nor has it “turned a corner.” It has not disappeared. It is much worse, and that is a reality.

Kudos to Ohio voters for choosing freedom, law and order over socialism and anarchy. But, to Democratic voters, especially the suburban soccer moms who defected from President Trump to Biden, may the first wind turbine farm be built in your backyards, and the new Biden suburban low-income housing project be built next to your homes. You get what you asked for! Ohio, stay red in 2024!

Columnist Robert Reich stated there was “no evidence of election fraud.” There isn’t enough voter fraud to change election results; however, even small amounts should be of concern and a threat to democracy. Reich wrote that democracy depends on moral courage. He accused most elected Republicans of not having it because they didn’t stand up to President Trump. Where was his moral courage when Obama / Biden spied on the Trump campaign? Or when Democrats pursued an unjustified impeachment?

This president has caused more trouble than any before him. January 20 can’t come soon enough. Good riddance.

If the election is not overturned, this country has entered a new phase where you don’t have to campaign across the country meeting folks and answering questions to get elected. If, like Joe, you have most national media and the social media on your side, you can win, which means anyone can win when there is no real vetting of the candidates. That’s scary.

Thanksgiving through New Year’s, enjoy Christmas lights on Poland Village Green’s south side, sponsored by local angels. Looking for a new home, many years ago, Poland Village Green’s angel fell in love with Poland when he passed those lights on the Green. This was where he wanted to live, raise his children. He offered assistance to village council, and for eight years, our Poland angel has had lights tested, repaired, installed, removed and stored — positive proof angels walk among us.

Don’t assume everyone has a smartphone, internet, access to WRTA or a working vehicle. There’s no Uber or Lyft, Grub Hub or DoorDash in my area. The only buses we see are for schools. Also, some folks cannot afford a smartphone or internet, etc.!

A beautiful I-80 and Belmont Avenue floral bed was dug up and landscaping rocks removed. This once gorgeous bed, maintained for free, by Liberty volunteers, is destroyed. Liberty Trustees hired landscapers to dig up the bed. An ugly mess now sits where rocks, bushes and plants once graced the interstate exit ramp. This is a loss for Liberty citizens and a black eye for efforts to make the area more attractive. What has been gained by this action?

God bless President Donald Trump. No U.S. wars, $1.80 gasoline, America is biggest global energy producer, cheap natural gas, COVID vaccines in record time, tapped down terrorism, prison reform, improved trade agreement and markets on record pace. Next year should be outstanding, if President-elect Biden doesn’t screw it up — if voter fraud is not proven. I keep waiting for the media to give Biden a standing ovation at press conferences. What a stark difference in treatment of Biden and Trump.

Most lies are harmless; others are dangerous. Our president has support of millions, who believe what he says. His lies have a greater impact. Lies about his first inauguration crowd size and million person march don’t hurt much. Birtherism lies divide the country. Lies that the virus will disappear, drinks that will kill it, and not wearing masks have led to deaths. Many more will die before it is under control. Don’t believe lies. Wear a mask.

A quarter of a million people in the U.S. have died due to President Trump’s homicidal negligence, as he has done nothing to help with the coronavirus ravaging this country. What has he done at all? In fact, what has he done for our area, what has he actually truly done for Youngstown? “Don’t sell your house,” he said. I mean, “Really?”

With all the chaos in this election, maybe it’s time to consider abolishing the Electoral College and let the popular vote elect the president. The final say should be the voice of the people.

I write with a great sense of relief because our democracy will survive under President Biden. However, I am disgusted that I live among so many who overlooked all Trump’s flaws and supported him with gusto. It is a sad day in America when truth and decency aren’t demanded. The people have spoken. Deal with it. And take down your signs and flags.

Gov. DeWine issued another mask order to stop the spread. We should wear masks properly, or it’s useless. Masks should cover mouth and nose. Some think they are special and don’t have to follow this order. That’s how they live their entire life. We all must wear the mask correctly so this virus will end.

The Nov. 5 editorial, “Americans must find calm and peace” acknowledges concern over inappropriate responses from those whose candidate lost the presidential election. It states such responses would be “a shame and we hope and pray that is not the end result.” Unfortunately, the Nov. 7 newspaper with its front-page picture of a Long Beach Gangsta member appears to be encouraging exactly the opposite. The editorial was a much-needed and welcomed step toward healing. The photo, not so much.

For those of us whose candidate lost the 2020 election, it’s been a painful week. But this country has never been about one person. It’s always been about ‘We the people’, who have spoken. If we ignore that, democracy is in danger of collapse and we won’t be voting for anyone. It’s time to put away the Trump signs and find our common ground as a nation. We need healing and unity much more than we need revenge.

Something is not right. Republicans pick up seats in Congress and appear to hold the Senate. Further, Trump gets more votes than Hillary Clinton got last time, yet Trump didn’t win yet. Very strange. Probably massive voter fraud going on in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Nevada, Georgia and Michigan. Also, I find it ironic that Washington, D.C., voted 93 percent for Biden and 7 percent for Trump. The swamp is alive and well.

Think about it. Trump received more votes than any sitting president in history (77,000,000). Biden received more votes than any candidate ever. Biden must be the most charismatic, visible and lovable candidate in history (Joe who struggled to win the Democratic nomination). Joe won states in the general election that he could not win in the primary. I believe America is truly an amazing, unpredictable and corrupt place these days.

I want to express disappointment in my Mahoning Valley neighbors who, with their Trump vote, reveal support for bigotry, divisiveness, bullying and disregard for civility. There is no way around it. Voting for Trump shows willingness to let him unleash four more years of discord on the nation and world. Thank you to those Ohioans who voted for Biden and to those in this great country that made the difference in bringing decency back to America.

Donald Trump continues to take advantage of situations at hand for his monetary benefit while preaching division with disregard for our Constitution and democracy. Wake up, my fellow Republicans. His supporters are donating millions for his personal legal challenges. His sister and niece were correct. Joe Biden’s recent speech, attitude and comments were encouraging. Thank you, Lord. Ever hear about a guy named John Kasich? Let’s move on and work together.

Hypocracy has a new name. It’s Mitch McConnell. Has anyone voted to make him, or Democrat Harry Reid before him, sole arbiter of what may or may not be heard before the Senate? Besides driving out the influence of cash on government, it’s high time the electorate has a say on the arcane and “honored traditions” used by Congress to obfuscate its activities and intentions.

A recent reader submission misstated facts on slavery. The Caribbean islands were just a European slave trader stopover. They traded any Africans regardless of religion. Rhode Island was first to abolish slavery in 1774. “Body of Liberties” did not apply to slaves, who couldn’t worship without permission, prevent masters from wiping them, selling their children or stop working sunrise to sunset or until death. Blacks don’t hate each other any more than whites who kill whites hate each other.

Thank you for your recent editorial regarding the Ohio State sexual abuse scandal. Indeed, there are many wrongs that need put right, and it’s time for U.S. Rep. Jim Jordan to be held accountable as well. He was an OSU wrestling coach during that period and should have come forward when his athletes told him about Dr. Strauss.

When will Youngstown deal with the city’s former great South Side? Years ago, I would have thought nothing of walking down South Avenue, Market Street or Glenwood at night for fine dining and entertainment. Today, it may be even odds to be shot at noon. When thugs are arrested, melt their weapons, give the ammunition to YPD. Deny plea deals. Give stiff sentences. Give incarcerated drug dealers fentanyl for a month, then take it. And roll out “Old Sparky” again.

Previous presidents of the Youngstown-Columbiana Association of Realtors have used their Sunday column to share tips and trends in real estate. However, the current president seems to be using the column to expound his own political beliefs. I hope his post-election columns will skip the politics and return to the custom of focusing on advice for buying and selling local real estate.

This presidential election should teach us our voting process must change. We cannot continue with a system so open to cheating and fraud. Does anyone really believe that all the votes counted were legally cast? A major problem involved the vast number of mail-in ballots. Another was the lack of transparency in some cities when those ballots were counted. We should be able to trust and rely on election results in our country. We are not a socialist nation yet!

This is not the right way to conduct a national election. Something doesn’t seem right when a bunch of ballots show up in Philadelphia, Detroit, Milwaukee and Las Vegas in the middle of the night; stop counting; then start again; and then stop; then start. Then it takes days to count? We must do better. And polls were wrong again, which is another problem. God help us. It just causes doubt and doesn’t build confidence in the system

The Liberty Board of Education just doesn’t get it. They never will pass a levy. They wanted a college campus. They now have it, but cannot maintain it. Be careful what you wish for. People are moving out of Liberty. It was a great place to live, but not now. Sad. I guess they need more absentee landlords.

Donald Trump’s message to the 210,000-plus who have died from COVID-19 was “You didn’t have to die. You should have handled it the way I did.” Wow! All those suffering now but who are still alive should pay attention! You can get back to your loved ones in no time at all!
