George Will wrong on his Trump assessment

DEAR EDITOR:

George Will’s Aug. 2 political column was puzzling. He is a self-proclaimed constitutionalist and conservative, professing the values of liberty, freedom, individual responsibility and traditional virtues. This seems consistent with our president’s beliefs. Yet Will’s writings are increasingly unbalanced and hostile toward Trump.

How can Will have such a wide vocabulary and such a narrow mind? My simple theory is that Will despises our president and is blind to his accomplishments. How can someone with a seemingly small vocabulary accomplish so much and enjoy the steadfast support of so many people? Not satisfied attacking President Trump, like many frustrated “Never Trumpers”, Will is attacking Trump supporters.

George Will is an intellectual; a man of words. Intellectuals suggest what should be done; most often the suggestion is idealistic. But they do not act on their suggestions. They are not men of action. They are critics and are rarely satisfied by what is accomplished, since the results are never ideal. Intellectuals like Will love the masses from a distance, but has an ingrained contempt for the common people who do the world’s work; and many of them are Trump supporters.

Will wrongly asserts that President Trump supporters are “homo economicus,” that is, we care only about economic gains. What rubbish! We have clear eyes. We see that President Trump is not a master of language. His speech must grate the intellectual and elites to the bone. But he is a man of action, not words.

Why is a man like Trump so popular? Because he gets things done! Benjamin Franklin quipped, “well done is better than well said,” and what Trump does is what we want done!

A serious conversation with so-called Trump “cult” members would reveal much deeper concerns. We see that increasing taxes and regulations hurt our economy, that welfare discourages stable families and the larger government grows the less freedom we have.

The political class, more interested in power and self-enrichment, do not serve the people. Bulging bureaucracies, not elected by we the people, are ever so slowly increasing their power while eroding our freedoms. There are many more concerns. Trump has challenged the status quo and exposed the national media’s bias and complicity.

President Trump is doing what we elected him to do. The progress made in his three plus years have been accomplished without Democratic support. They were too busy trying to remove him from office than do the people’s work. And that has not changed one iota.
