Helping others is greatest joy of all

DEAR EDITOR:

What brings most joy in life? I believe it is the joy of helping others!

It is said that it is better to give than to receive. I believe this is true. I think it is a blessing from God, because in order to be able to give, you must have an abundance of something. It might be money. It might be time. Or maybe just love. But then again, love is the “greatest thing in the world!” It’s the one thing you can freely give without diminishing the amount that remains. Actually, as you give it away, the amount remaining grows even larger!

If you could have only one word to describe Jesus Christ, it would be love.

The other fascinating thing about being able to help others is that it always comes back around to you. All of us have needed help in our lifetimes and received it. Maybe not as much as we may have wanted or maybe not in the form we expected, but help always comes to you. With this help, you are blessed, and you now have an obligation to help others when that opportunity is presented to you, and it will be, sooner or later.

The fact that we are able to help others and in kind receive help ourselves is how God intended us to be able survive this difficult trip through human life. When we come to the Lord, repent our sins, and profess our belief that Jesus Christ is our Savior, God gives us salvation and the wonderful gift of His holy spirit to help us through this life and into the next. What does the Lord expect in return? He expects us to help our brothers and sisters by telling them about the love of Jesus Christ and by demonstrating our new life with our love and concern for others. He asks that we do unto others as we would have them do unto us and we must always remember Jesus’ words, “What you do for the least of my brethren, you do for me.”

Praise the Lord!
