Policing for profit doesn’t help safety

DEAR EDITOR:

Reading the Tribune Chronicle in November, I noticed Weathersfield is installing fixed speed cameras. The Weathersfield Township police chief was quoted, “With photo enforcement, drivers slow down and the roads become safer.”

Nothing is further from the truth! Taking a picture of a presumed speed violator or any other illegal activity isn’t going to stop it immediately. This questionably-legal action is not protecting and serving the community.

Within the past year, we informed a Weathersfield officer that cars and trucks are speeding and passing in the turning lane in front of our school, ETI Technical College, in the 2076 block of U.S. Route 422. Our students cross the street at different times of the day. This unsafe situation is not going to improve by Weathersfield officers taking pictures for profit.

Having one of their cars parked in the adjacent parking lot in view of all drivers at peak hours would slow drivers down, and they would drive sensibly.

But instead, Blue Line Solutions out of Tennessee and Weathersfield Township are anticipating a huge cash windfall at the expense and safety of the citizens.
