Manufacturing still important in Ohio
Data centers are getting a lot of attention in Ohio, but one organization reminds us the backbone of the Buckeye State economy is still an industry with a more human touch. The Ohio Manufacturing Association released its 2025 Ohio Manufacturing Counts report Thursday, in which the analysis shows manufacturing is the largest private sector contributor to the state’s economy.
Manufacturing supports jobs, income, exports and investment. The association says it also continues to make progress in efficiency and environmental metrics.
“Manufacturing sets the pace for Ohio’s economy,” said Ryan Augsburger, the association’s president. “No other sector delivers this level of growth or competitiveness. Our companies are investing, hiring and modernizing in ways that keep Ohio ahead of the curve.”
Average annual pay in the industry continues to increase — it is up to $76,493 now, paying $49.9 billion in wages to Ohioans.
When it comes to exports, Ohio ranks tenth nationwide, with industrial machinery leading the way. And, according to the association, industrial emissions have decreased by more than 75% since 1988.
“Ohio manufacturers are proving every day that economic growth and environmental progress can move together,” Augsburger said. “We are producing more with less energy, less waste and fewer emissions, and that momentum is accelerating.”
Ohio is the heart of it all for manufacturing, too. And as our economy diversifies and grows, manufacturers will no doubt be the force that drives it.
