April to raise child abuse awareness

Some 1,750 children died in 2020 from abuse and neglect nationwide. Child protective services responded to more than 3 million allegations of child maltreatment.

Experts say prevention is the best hope for reducing child abuse and neglect and for improving lives of children and families. In an effort to strengthen families and prevent child abuse, April again will serve as National Child Abuse Prevention Month. Sadly, child abuse and neglect are widespread and, too often, invisible.

In Mahoning County, a visible reminder of hundreds of pinwheels — each representing an individual who provided a voice advocating for an abused or neglected child — will be “planted” in Boardman Park. Mahoning County Children Services and the Child Advocacy Center at Akron Children’s Hospital will plant the pinwheel garden display on the front lawn of the St. James Meeting House on Friday.

But National Child Abuse Prevention Month is more than just raising awareness. It’s also about working together to reduce it. We here in the Mahoning Valley can join in this effort by providing our families and those in our community with the support they need.

We should recognize the challenges that families face and offer support and encouragement to reduce stress. Everyone can promote social norms discouraging violence.

Let people know that violence is unacceptable and steps will be taken to protect the victim of violence.

Encourage people to stand up and speak up, if they can do so safely, when a person is being harassed or hurt or needs support.

We also can support community programs providing safe, healthy conditions for children and families. Examples include supporting family-friendly work policies like paid leave and flexible work schedules.

Undoubtedly, all parents and caregivers know parenting is hard work. Experts offer some suggestions to help make childhood experiences more positive.

Establish a routine. Children feel secure and thrive in structured environments.

Praise your child when he / she does something right. Pay attention to your child when he /she is trying to communicate with you. Set aside time each day to talk and play with your child. This strengthens the bond between you.

All children deserve to grow up in safe, supportive environments. Together, we can end child abuse and neglect.

The National Child Abuse Hotline is 1-800-4-A-Child (or 1-800-422-4453).

Ohioans who suspect child abuse / neglect can report it at Ohio Child Abuse Report Hotline, 855-O-H-CHILD (855-642-4453).

Report suspicions to Mahoning County Children Services 24/7 Report Line at 330-941-8888.
